ing- in a remote and forlorn region, with
his activities restricted by environment and
further curtailed by needs of the military,
the one item he covets above all else-
and jealously guards what little he has-is
freedom. The slightest imposition upon that
freedom staEts morale on the long ride to
oblivion.
Acco rding to psychologists and the "how
to be happy though living" school of philo·
sophy, a well, rounded life consists of work,
social life, and sports or recreation. An
over·accent on any of these causes unbal·
ance and unhappiness.
The two S's-social and sports-are the
sore spots in an outposter's life. The first,
naturally, is out because in order to have
a , social swim, there must be female fishes;
but the worlds' best bait cannot lure them
up here.
Recreational facilities are on the agenda
and their day is coming-as surely as vic-
tory- but why can't the time spent writing
and enforcing new regulations be used to
hurry that day?
Men can be fed with vitamin-packed vic-
tuals, appetizingly prepared; they can be
housed in the finest accommo dations with
every comfort faci lity available; their work
can be made as attractive as possible. Yet
the store of nervous energy grows and cries
for outlet. If the cry is ignored, blockage
sets in, followed by stagnation and stale-
ness; mental and physical apathy. Egress
may come in th e form of irritable, trigger-
tempered outbursts on slight provocation,
leaving shredded nerves and hostility foam-
' ing in its wake. Then agai n energy can be
sublimated into sports and games which are
eye-sharpenin g, invigora ting to the mind
and body. Which form of outlet is most
salutary?
When the top-rankers answer this ques-
tion, th ey won't find it necessary to answer
any more "morale" questions about we out-
posters.
Yours for quick victory-the greatest
morale booster of 'em all.

and which, in that period, has become a
considerably changed position. There h as
been a tremendous turnover of men, for
one thing, and also of officers with a con-
sequent chan ge in policies.
The men with whom I am now working
are potentially fighting men of the best sort.
Weare a young, active and combat-minded
group of soldiers with real energy instead
of the dull oft-timid and civilian-thinking
group which I'd left behind.
