an hour if I wanted, b ut this would mean
an ascent of over two hours, with stops at
eight different stages, and big chances at
that. If I remained only twenty minutes, I
must take nearly an hour in the ascent.
And this was figured from my entering
the water, not from when I reached the bot·
tom. My partner, watch in hand, woula
signal me every fifteen minutes.

To work on the unobstructed clear floor
was a rare privilege, a diver's paradise;
it"s the sort of thing a diver dreams about
which seldom happens. All I wanted now
was to locate the wreck of the Santa Paula.
There were great masses of Algae and
other marine growth, protected from the
current by the formations and rocks, and
much sand was thereabouts. The bottom
sloped rather steeply just there and I was
crawling around some overhanging rocks,
searching this way and that for some
tangible signs of this treasure· laden hulk's
remains.
It was then that I discovered the Santa
Paula!
I was crawling very slowly, somewhat be·
wildered by the flood of new impressions
which all these sights brought to my mind,
when I stopped short, gazing ahead incred·
ulously. Working to the left along the face

is that the 'tiger' might bite through the
lines, but that's improbable. With a knife,
I'm safe enough!"
My partner gawked.
Satisfied that the air·pumps were now
going smo.othly I put on the weights.
"Everything's clear," said my partner as
he put my helmet on for me. "Not a sign
of sharks and no fish about to draw 'em."
He gave my helmet the eighth turn that
fastened it, and locked it there. The face·
plate slammed shut and was locked. The
air·pumps were now clicking evenly, two
men at them, natives. I went down the
Jacob's ladder into the water, took .over the
weighted line and went down fast.
Too much air; I shoved my head abruptly
against the cock of the escape valve and let
some out.
Down and down I went, swiftly. Details
were distinct and not foggy. The water was
most clear. The fish that flittered away be·
fore my descent were clear cut, of all shapes
and hues, moving slowly about or darting
here and there quickly. A large octopus
went scurrying in front of me shooting
itself along with its powerful suction· pump
at an incredible speed.
Then the bottom appeared. I stood there
in astonishment. I was in the midst of coral
formations, and the novel beauty of it hit
me like a sudden blow. It was like a sort of
fairyland, strange and fascinating - the
whole scene down there had an eerie, un-
natural quality and beauty.
I signaled down, and soon came back the
signal of all well.
There was a heavy current which swept
along this great submerged wall and sea of
rock and coral formations and pinnacles.
There was light enough down there, and the
coral took on all the colors of the rainbow.
The sun's rays, shooting down from the sur-
face produced effects like those of the stage,
where powerful lights of different tints
transform the scenery; and there was a
glitter where they pierced the moving water.
My real fear was giant morays, for these
viscious eels are worse than sharks by a
good deal, and sometimes over ten feet in
length armed with wicked sharp teeth. The
giant clam, too, is a trap for the unwary
diver. These monsters grow to a size of
three or four feet across, weighing the bet-
ter part of a ton; they are heavily crusted
over with sea growths, and a diver's foot
may slip right between the valves un-
awares; they clamp together with crushing
force, and the luckless diver is in a bear
trap at the bottom of the ocean. A diver
by himself grabs hif; big knife and tries

to reach the hinge; if that fails, the one
chance is to hack one's leg off.
However, not seeing any signs of these
deep-sea creatures, confidence began to
grow, and I started out bodily, the craft
above shifting its position as I advanced.
As I was working in a hundred and
seventy feet-the lead had told me this-
I had at the outside thirty minutes in which
to stay down-less if possible. I could stay
