~AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA~
Marines, have the situation well in hand.
The fighting forces are getting their favor·
ites on records, played on the thousands of
portable, hand·opera ted phonographs and
automa tic phonographs in the island.
Th is use of th e small phonograph is
particularly marked in the Amer ican sub·
mar ines that prowl enemy waters, Chaus·
see said. There, with grave peril always
present, the sailors enjoy the recorded clas·
sics as well as the popular pieces. Phono·
graphs, Chaussee pointed ou t, are an im·
portan t part of the submarines' recrea·
tional equipment because radio programs
are of necessity ruled out.
On land and sea there is one almost in·
Aexible, unwritten rule on music-"Aa/!:-
waving" and nostalgic songs about sweet·
hearts and 10 t loves are taboo.
"It's hard to believe the importance that
has come to be placed on music by our
boys on the islands," Chaussee said. "On
days when cargoes from the mainland are
opened (shipmen ts of records arrive from
a week to three weeks apart) the post ex·
changes and civilian music counters are
jammed with service men standing three
and four deep at the counters to get their
records. Mi litary authorities have reco/!:·
nized the value of music as a morale·build·
er and have assi/!:ned definite percentages
of cargo spare for records and phono·
graphs.
"The Ships Service Store at Pearl Har·
bor does an important job in supplying
the Aeet. Chaplains use records for reI i/!:·
ious services. In the submarine fleet per·
haps the most requested classic is DeBussy's
'Cathedral Under the Sea.'
"The war has brought phonographs and
modern American mu ic to practically
every island- and there are many more of
them than you think-scattered around in
the Pacific. Even Midway Island has a
juke box.
"Honolulu and the islands altogether will
be the hub of Pac ific trade, communica-
tions and airways after the war," he said.
"And there is certain to be a terrific tour·
ist business for the islands when the seas
are safe again. But the war began at Pearl
Harbor, and we'll be in there at the finish."
