Here is an unusual disc. On the first
side Whiteman gives an excellent reno
dition to this picture tune and the guest
star vocalists. Johnny Mercer and Jack
Teagarden, will ask for nickels if they
can be crammed on the program strip.
Second side has Johnny Mercer in his
well known "Salt Lake City" groove
and doing vocals on a tune that gives
him plenty opportunity to use his whole
repertoire. Excellent.

number taken at swing tempo is its
best claim to a featured spot on the
stack. Platter mate is a Mercer·Mac
Gregor ballad that Martha handles
nicely with the help of the Mellowaires.

A pair of solid tunes that will click on
any automatic phonograph. First side is
an original by Johnny Mercer and sung
by Mercer with Paul Weston and his or-
chestra in the background. Mercer is a
polished showman and knows how to
sell a tune. He does a bang· up job on
the "G. I" tune and the humorous military
lyrics will put it over big. On second
side Mercer does an old ditty and
brings it up to date with some modern
lyrics. Smash hits. Don't skip this disc.

Lucky Millinder picked a current fav-
orite in the automatics in race locations
for his first Decca recording since the
lifting of the ban. Erskine Hawkins' re-
cording of "Don't Cry Baby" has been
giving a good account of itself in all
parts of the country and this recording
by Lucky will only serve to divide in·
terest. Second side is a smooth ballad
that doesn't pack too much interest for
the automatics.

Robertson has taken the Ted Daffin
hillbilly hit and given it a modem and
rhythmic treatment that will please in
some spots but the hillbilly music ad·
diets won't give it much of a tumble. " I
Walk Alone" is another hillbilly ballad
subjected to the Robertson method of
modernization. Know your spots in
planting this disc on your programs.

This is the first quartet of numbers re-
corded for Hit under a new one session
recording date originated by Eli Ober·
stein. (See story in this issue). All four
numbers are current favorites and ex·
ceptionally well recorded with Bob Da·
vis and the Quintet handling the vocal
work on the first number and Liz Tilton
committing herself admirably on the
other three sides. Hit really comes into
its own with two hits on each disc with
this pair of recordings. Worthy of your
spots--good or bad.
