Record FiCjht Costly
NEW YORK- Th e 13-month recording
ban whi ch ended abruptly September 30th
when Decca signed with th e America n
F ederation of Mu sicians, didn' t cost th e
even million in lost revenu e prexy P etrillo
claimed but it did cost AFM in the neigh-
bo rhood of three million doll ar_
In the first half of 1942 Columbia is re-
ported to have pa id AF M $435,000 for th e
fi r t six months of 1942_ Vi ctor's report was
not available, but even if th e amount ap-
proxima ted th at of Columbi a's it would
mean a " tak e" of only a milli on dollars
for six months for the AFM. Added to thi s
fi ~ure must be th e contribution of Decca
which would be conside rably smaller inas-
much as Decca's fi gure would not includ e
classical recordin gs.
Using these fi gures as a basis for strik-
in g an average, hows th at AFM lost be-
tween two and a half milli on and three
million doll ars in the 13-month recor din ~
ban.
