HOUSTON, T exas - Operators ·C. M.
Robertson, F. C. Smi th and Paul Janke,
treated at the Hou ston Operators social
meetin g and party at Southern Select b eer
warehouse on Sept. 3rd. As usual most of
the op erators and servicemen in the City
were present to enjoy a fin e spaghetti sup·
per , plenty of Southern Select b eer, and
learn a few thin gs helpful in phonograph
operatin g.
William P eacock acted as master of
ceremoni es. Representatives of the local In-
ternal Revenue offi ce and City Tax offi ces
were present and informally discussed som e
things connec ted with phono graph operat-
in g and loca tions.
A large P enny Arcade was open ed in th e
East End section of Hou ston Sept. 4th.
Owners are Frank and Billie Saenz and
Mr. and Mrs. Grafton Nuckols, all form erly
with Rogers Greater Shows. Frank Saenz is
manage~, with Billie Saenz as cashier.
Nuckol s is workin g in a sh ipyard until
business improves enough to j ustify hi s
active connection with th e firm.

Co. Manager, Navy; Operator Jack Arm-
strong, Army ; Operator J. J. Boyd, Army;
Opera tor George Hubbard, Army; Opera-
tor Ted Mahavier, A rmy; Don Morrison,
record salesman for Straus-Frank Co.,
Army. A few more, including H arold Long,
Commercial Music manager , have ex-
pressed intentions of enlisting shortly.
Operator C. W. Robertson open ed a nifty
drive·in and dance cafe on the North Side
ea~ly in September. He reported busin ess
good and improvin g.
Ernest Gates, owner of Gulf Sta tes
Amusement Co., smacked i'nto a bit of
labor shortage recently. His brother, E. W.
Gates, went to work in the shipyard. Next
day hi s service man, J. T. Chadwick, suf-
fered a broken foot and could not drive a
ca r for weeks. Meantime George H ubb ard
who replaced E. W . Gates as an operator
went into the Army. Th en Russell Merritt,
service man, b ecame ill with th e flu and
was off two weeks. Last report was that
Ern est and his wife, who also is secretary,
were still present, well, carryin g on their
work ; and perhaps a bi't glad they are not
owners of, say a several million doll ar
con cern.
Most local op erators and distributors do·
nated to the limit in the nationwide scrap
drl· ve. At Galveston over 100 slot machl' n es
were add ed to th e pile.

CHICAGO.- Des pi te th e fact that Uni ted
Manufacturing Co. is one of the newest
organizations in th e game refurbishing
fi eld, th e firm reports that every part of
its business is runn ing smoothly and reo
fu rbished gam es are b eing shipped to all
parts of th e coun try.
"It is because of the smoo th fun ctioning
of all departments of our fa ctory that we
are able to make the stepped·up deliveries
we have b een making since our first week
in this business. Orders and reorders ar e
coming in faster every day. Without prop-
erly co-ordinated departments, it would be
. impossibl e to make gam es over in th e skill·
fu l manner we are noted for and yet give
delivery on them as quickly as we do. Too
fast returning of games usually me ans that
som e part of the work has been given the
once over lightly treatment, but that never
happens in our plant. Midways and Sun
Valleys are going out faster than ever."
Mrs. H. R. Perkins Passes

September 30th.
Survivin g are her husband, who is con·
n eeted wi th the Buckley Music Systems
and Buckley Tradin g Post, and three chil o
dren, Shirl ey, John a nd Carol P e rkin s.
