Del Bern, Fresno, was in to see Fred
Gaunt at Trojan and take home a couple
of new machines.
Jack Thompson of T hompson Brothers,
Delano, was in on the 8th to pick up sup·
plies. In unloading a console at Herb Mc·
Clellan's, it was found that Jack had
brought down a neat nest of black widow
spiders in the base of the' machine. Seems
spiders of this type are quite prevalent in
the San Joaquin, and climb up into the
innards of machines to enjoy the warmth
therein.
Lucille Arnold is back from her vacation
and is now busy once more on her route
at Barstow.
George Kelly of the Laymon Service De·
partment has purchased a small walnut

and has arrl\nged his time so he can handle

Jim Cameron, formerly of the operating
team of Trimble and Cameron, had a fur·
lough from the army the first part of the
month and dropped in at Laymons. Every.
one agreed Jim is looking fine.

field in San Diego and is now operating a
restaurant and cocktail lounge. Art says
that business far surpasses his fondest
dreams.
The Laymons are really a busy pair these
days. Paul with his air raid warden work
and Lucille with her Red Cross work, make
one of the most occupied couples in the
business in these parts.
C. A. Tomlinson, Exeter, was in the first
part of the month for new equipment.
Arlene Ginse, secretary at Laymons, is
now Mrs. Russell Early. She was married
on Sep tember 14th and the happy couple
spent their honeymoon up in the moun·
tains.
Word filters south that Jack Moore is
expected home in Portland in another
week. Jack has been at Brownsville, Texas;
for the past 90 days on his Civilian Air
Corps work.
.
Steve Brodie is doil)g well since moving
to Los Angeles from ~ong Beach. Almost
any day you can spy some of the biggest
vending operators in his place at 1139 San
Julian.
L. B. McCreary left Los Angeles on the
14th for a few days of duck hunting on the
E. T. Mape ranch near Stockton.

WVMOA Discusses Tax
LOS ANGELES.-Taxes occupied the
main discussions at the September 29th
meeting of the Western Vending Machine
Operators' Association held at McDonald's
restaurant in the Gates Hotel.
The membership is pleased with the tax
established in the city whereby the op·
erators pay a $10.00 per year occupational
tax for the first $5,000.00 in gross business
and $1.00 per thousand for additional busi·
ness.
Also discussed at length was the pro·
posal made in Washington, D. c., recently
to tax vendors $3.00 per machine per year.
With the average yearly net from a vendor
running from $3.00 to $5.00 it is easy to
see the utter unfairness of such an ex·
horbitant tax.
Larry Hagler offered his resignation as
secretary, claiming that his duties as air
raid warden prohibited him from function·
ing as he would like to. J . B. Yatter, a
member for more than three years, was
elected to the position.
The next dinner meeting will be held at
the same place at 6:30 p. m. on October
27th. All vending machine operators are
cordially invi ted to attend and learn of the
values of a WVMOA membershin.
