the machines must be spread in vari.ous
departments. Usually the 30·day tests will
determine this f act.or.
I t has been m.ost l.ocal cigarette, candy
bar, and bul k vend.or .operat.or's experience
in recent m.onths that the machines will
pay better if placed in the industrial l.oca·
ti.ons rather than seeking small-st.ore types
.of l.ocati.ons f.or them. There have been a
large number .of requests t.o .operat.ors, speci-
ally since the new ODT .order became ef-
fective, f.or vend.ors .of all types particularly
cigarette. Usually it has been f.ound that
these requests are fr.om small l.ocati.ons that
DO l.onger receive day-t.o-day delivery .on
cigarettes and c.onfecti.ons and do n.ot yet
kn.ow h.ow t.o buy these items f.or their
l.onger-peri.ods-between-delivery n.ow.
It is further these .operat.or's .opini.on that
once these small businesses are able t.o
hand le their own stocks, they'll have the
.operat.or's machine taken .out since with
them it is a Pr.ofit rather than Service
.operati.on.
Merchandising these new areas has de·
vel.oped pretty much int.o a matter .of sell-
ing the war-w.orkers amusement near their
place .of empl.oyment but vending t.o them
.on the j.ob. Thus the operat.or bringing
equipment fr.om rural t.o industrial areas is
finding it pr.ofitable t.o spend s.ome time in
the vicinity checking traffic-where the
men eat lunch .or catch their bus- and l.oca-
ting amusement machines as near t.o these .
sp.ots as p.ossible.

Arcade. He ch.ose a sp.ot that n.ot .only had
a g.o.od general d.ownt.own traffic but als.o
faced a street car and bus transfer p.oint
that was .one .of the m.ost used in his area.
He is quick t.o admit that in this very
high-rent area his arcade must d.o a mini-
mum .of 8,000 plays a day to meet overhead
-and s.o far, he says, it has done it.
