SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -This city
has recently passed a new vendin g machine
license amendment to the original pinball
li cense ordinance whereby all operators of
I c vending machines selling gum, candy
peanuts, etc., including I c weighing mao
chin es and other I c machines, that are not
prohibited by State Law, will be licensed
at $20.00 per year.
License fee is an occupational on e and
does not affect operators or location owners
having three or less machines of the I c
va riety.

notable changes in the coin machine in·
dustry in St. Louis. P rimarily noticeable was
-t.he giving up of vaca tions by many of
those operators who form erly left th e city
for less torrid reso rt spo ts by the first of
June each year. Tire conservation is on e
reason ; but th e demand for service and
lack of servi cemen has made it necessary
for most of th e boys to take tools in hand
and stay on their routes merely to keep
them active. Thus, a lot of form er "execu·
tives" are now comin g in with grease on
their hands and learning the intricacies of
pinball machin es and phonographs all over
again.

those operators running phonographs also
found th e ni ckels collected more than com-
pensated. There has been a thirst for
music in every spot in the city of unpre·
cedented size, so that many straight pin·
ball men have elected to add a few phono·
graphs where available.

era tor's Association at the regular monthly
meetin g h ad a new topic to di scuss-the
tra din g back and forth, or barterin g, of
machines b etween operators who have
found this system helps to revitalize in·
com e on the routes. Meeting at the De So to
Hotel, the g roup of members voted to puh·
lish for each other's b enefit a com plete list
of machines on h and whi ch they would
be willing to tra de for other equipment.
"Th ere are lots of machines on on e route
barely payin g their way while th ey would
be profitabl e on another" prominent opera·
tor J ack Beckman said, "and when two
of th e operators find th at th ey can ex·
change machines to benefit both, mllny
probl ems are solved. Our id ea is to make it
possibl e for any of us to barter or trade
with cash for machines which we feel we
can use, providing we have somethin g to
offer in r eturn." "Horse tradin g" of this
type has fl ourished during th e past few
weeks. Al Lindauer of South St. Louis has
changed three pintables for one old phono·
graph and two pintables and reported that
th e change netted him $40 in the first
week , while Elmer Selinghaus, with whom
he made th e deal, also showed a better
profit.
The association also di scussed th e annual
picnic, which will come up in July this
