Dear Mr. Blackford:
Please excuse the pencil. In the army
one uses whatever is available. That is only
one of the many things about army life I
have learned in the eight days since I en-
tered the service. And, honestly, those days
have been among the happiest of my life.
Each moment, each hour, has been so busy,
so full of action and often excitement that
I've already lost any memory of being any-
thing but a soldier.
I've felt only the vaguest twinge of home-
sickness and at rare intervals-when I've
seen some of the other fellows being vis-
. ited by their families or girl friends. This
camp permits visitors every evening from
6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and all day Sunday.
We are located only 8 miles from New
York City from which many of the soldiers
have been drafted, so that for many men
this camp is merely an hour's trip from
home.
Fort Totten is ideally situated for coast
artillery and anti-aircraft practice, which is
my work now. It is surrounded on two
sides by a river and on the others by the
most beautiful countryside in the East.
This place is almost like a country home
and not a military installation.
Though I've only been a soldier for eight
days I have already enjoyed two of the
greatest emotional pleasures and thrills of
my life. I have suddenly found out the
real meaning of pride. When I put on my
uniform for the first time the thrill of pride
- it could have been nothing else- made
me so emotional that I left like crying but
my throat was choked. I felt as hot as a
feverish desert-fighter and my heart was
beating so rapidly it felt like it was trying
to burst through my skin.
I felt so odd at feeling that way, yet I
didn't think I' was being a sissy. I re-
member being surprised that I was acting
that way but noti ced that the barracks
were unusually quiet. Usually the fellows
were cursing or shouting but for a few
minutes after we all put on our uniforms
for inspection we all felt that strange emo-
tion which must be the closest kin to real
pride that any of us ever felt.
Another similar moment occurred after I
had been marching with my Battery for
awhile and abruptly realized how strong we
were, how much in unison, how vigorous
were our steps and cadence count. Though
drill is supposed to be a tirin g and boring
task I enjoy it tremendously, even though
my Battery is still a comparatively ragged,
uneven outfit whose members are never-
except by coincidence- doin g the same step
when "Hup, two, three, four" is counted.
Frankly, I'm so happy now with swell
companions, a healthy life in a friendly
atmosphere and a feelin g of importance
tinged with pride (honest) that I'm sorry
I did not enlist long ago. However, I'll
make up for that by trying twice as hard to
make good.
Yesterday I worked on the Battery
mimeographed newspaper but will try to
get a field job in preference to working on
the paper. Even two weeks ago I would
have sworn I would not feel this way, i. e.,
that I would want to work where there's
more action, more comradeship and excite-
ment than in the office. But it's all up to
my officers and I'll accept anything that
they give me. But for at least six more
weeks I'll be busy with basic training.
