NEW YORK - Frank Colby of the
Bell Syndicate didn't know what he
was getting into when he asked news-
paper readers through his special syn-
dicated feature to send in what they
considered the ten most beautiful
words in the English language.
Naturally opinions varied consid-
erably but top honors for orginality
went to a ch ap in Texas who selected :
"coin, spondulics, long green , cash,
filthy lucre, dinero, shekels, mazuma,
dough, folding money."

Punch Board
Not Gambling
LOS ANGELES-It may be illegal to run
a candy punchboard in San ta Monica, but
in the eyes of th e state such a device doesn't
constitute a "gambling machine." This was
the recommendation here by Franklin B.
Cole, State Board of Equalization referee,
in connection with the case of Robert J .
Collignon.
Colli gnon was brought before the Board
after he had been arrested and convicted
on the charge of operating a "gamblin g
device." His hearing, fo llowing the usual
routine, was to determine whether he had
imperiled his liquor license. Then Judge
Cole learned of what the "gambling" con·
sisted. The Board dismissed the case.

SAN FRANCISCO - Thanks of Frank
Co ughlin , Scoutmaster, the committeemen,
and members of Troop 101 of Daly City,
Calif., have been extended to Ed Heinle and
Al Armos of Golden Gate Novelty Co. for
the donation of two marble games for use
in th e troop's private club room by troop
members only.
C. G. Gesner, troop committee chairman,
wrote: "After watching the boys last eve·
ning playing th e games, we came to the
conclusion that a pin-ball game can really
be played purely for fun and excitement.
Some of the boys actually developed con-
siderable skill at it.
"It is a shame th at such an enjoyable
game as these modern pin-ball games should
have to suffer just because youngsters have
been allowed to loiter around them in a
few publi c places."
Indica tion is that permitting this group
of boys to play in their own private quarters
without need for coins will keep at least
that group away from games installed in
public places.
Al Armos, who owns and operates Golden
Gate Novelty Co. and who made the gift
possible, is a member of the board of di-
rectors of the Amusement Merchants' As-
sociation of San Francisco, and the letter
of thanks which came to him in this in-
stance is, according to Sidney Mackin, the
association's managing director, typical of
those being received at his office in connec-
tion wi th the organization's program of co-
operation with th e various civic bodies . •
