State Groups Meet
On Legislation
SAN FRANCISCO-With eight bills al-
ready i'ntroduced into the lower house of
the California legislature regulating or
requiring licensing fees for the operation
of games, vending machines and music
equipment, the Amusement Merchants'
Association, Inc., here, headed by Sid
Mackin as managing dfrector, is taking an
initiative in securing fair treatment of the
interests of operators.
Following several weeks of conferences
with the Associated Operators of Los An-
geles County, Inc., whose managing director
is Curley Robinson, a program was devised
whereby the two organizations will make
a thorough coverage of their respective
state interests- that is, northern and sou th-
ern California-through which aid is being
enlisted from the communities now receiv-
ing financial benefit from the operation of
games through the medium of licenses and
taxes. As an example, the city of San
Francisco derives from pinball game ope-
ration alone an annual revenue of better
than $103,000.

touch wi'th the state capitol at Sacra-
mento during the legislative sessions, and
both operator groups will maintain contact
with these. The San Francisco association
has established headquarters at the capitol,
as well.
It is believed that this method of handl-
ing legislative measures has not been at-
tempted before. Progress of the plan was
discernable after only the first several
weeks had passed.
At the same time an excellent opportun-
ity presented itself for setting up primary
machinery for the dissemination of educa-
tional material and for the future develop-
ment of outlets for a long-range public
relations program. The harmony being
created by the two associations' close work
together is reported as "gratifyi'ng", and
predictions are that when the legislative
session is ended a step of permanent prog-
ress will have been made, and that an
analysis of experience will result in very
valuable, concrete material which will be
beneficial to the industry as a whole.
All operators are being kept informed
as to progress by means of bulletins and
form letters.

LOS ANGELES - Calm in a troubled
world is the aim of the Associated Oper-
ators of Los Angeles County, Inc., whose
managi'ng director, Curley Robinson, has
sent out a "Design for Living." The printed
card : "The most lovable quality any human
being can possess is tolerance. It is the vis-
ion that enables one to see things from an-
other's viewpoint. It is the generosity that
concedes to others the right to their own
opinions and peculiarities. It is the bigness
that enables us to let people be happy in
their own way instead of our way."
