For obvious reasons, the identity of
the story-telle r will not be disc;:losed; he
shall be referred to simply as, "Mr.
Wilson."
A number of years ago, when Mr.
Wilson was manager of his company's
Minneapolis office, a young man sold
him a set of fine books. Shortly aft er the
books were delivered, the salesman
called on Mr. Wilson to a sk if he were
pleased with the merchandise . Whe n
Mr. Wilson answered affirmatively, the
young salesman asked Mr. Wilson to
refer him to the a ssistant manager. Well
satisfied with the purchase, and favor-
ably impressed with the salesman, Mr.
Wilson gave him a card of introduction.
The next day, the salesman returned.
He informed Mr. Wilson that he had
sold the assistant manager, and he ex-
pressed his appreciation. Mr. Wilson
was pleased, and when the salesman
asked for another lead, Mr. Wilson read-
ily supplied it.
Again, after a brief interval, the sales-
man returned, announced that he had
sold the prospect, thanked Mr. Wilson,
and requested another lead. Again Mr.
Wilson obliged.
This continued for a week, and finally,
as you would expect, Mr. Wilson began
to tire of the arrangement. At the last
request, Mr. Wilson politely told the
y oung salesman that he had given him
a half-dozen leads already, and that he
thought he had done enough good
deeds for one week.
The salesman agreed with him,
thanked him profusely, and as he was
about to leave, declared, "Mr. Wilson,
you have been my s econd-best refer-
ence .''
Mr. Wilson smiled, and the salesman
continued, "Only Mr. Jones has given
me more leads."
Mr. Wilson almost jumped out of his
chair. "Jones?" he shouted. "Do you
mean Jones, the manager of our com-
petitor's office, acro ss the street?"
"Yes," the salesman sweetly replied,
"Mr. Jones has given me three more
leads than you have."
Mr. Wilson snorted. "Jones-why that
idiot can't do anything I can't do. Wait
a moment." And with that he picked up
the telephone and called a half-dozen
people, referring the salesman and his
books to them. When he fini shed, he
snorted again, "There 's nothing that
Jones can do that I can't do."
The salesman shook hands with Mr.
Wilson, thanked him, and told him that
he was now the champion reference-
giver.
About a month later, the salesman
again called on Mr. Wilson, and after
the usual amenities, told him, "I should
have come about a week ago."
"Why?" inquired Mr. Wilson.
The salesman answered solemnly,
"Jones is again in the lead!"
"What! " Mr. Wilson shrieked. "Didn't
I tell you that guy can do nothing that
I can't do?" And with that he picked up
the telephone and called more friend s.
This went on for quite some time, and
finally, as Mr. Wilson concludes the
story, the young salesman retired on the
commissions he earned through the
competitive efforts of Messrs. Wilson
and Jones.
In a modified way, this principle can
well be applied to the job of placing
machines. A contest tactfully conducted
among several of .your close friends
might be worth dollars and cents to
you.
