died at the height of his success from tuber-
culosis of the spine and liver in Baltimore
last month.
Ella Fitzgerald, discovered by Webb
years ago and adopted hy him, will head

REVIEW
( Phone: LOngocre 5-4877)
cycle of polkas, beginning with "The Beer
Parrel Polka," is being done largely for the
automatic phonograph trade.
Like the operator, the talent scout must
watch the public trend. He may help make
the trend but he must first anticipate and
recognize it. "They want swing music with
melody now," Perry states. "A few months
ago they just wanted swing."
There aren't many rules for picking ar-
tists that can be followed, Joe claims. "You
just have to know, to feel, and to hope you
are right." There is one rule, however, that
cannot be ignored: An artist may not
always click the first time, but that does
not mean that he is no good for records.
He may seem mediocre and fail to go over,
then he will make one record that "clicks,"
and the rest of his records will become
more popular. A second rule that isn't for-
gotten is that there are some artists who are
public favorites year after year. You soon
recognize them and you realize the value
of their work, Joe thinks. A musician who
has been an outstanding recording artist
for over 15 years is Guy Lombardo, now a
Decca favorite. Perry sums it up with, "A
lot of fellows come and go, but Guy Lom-
bardo just keeps on going."
There are few men in Hollywood who
attend more previews than Joe Perry.
Studio, musician and public previews are
all open to Joe, and he attends them with
constant regularity. They have become his
work, his leisure and his pleasure.
Many times he will attend a public pre-
view and a musicians preview of a picture
the same night. The first, to get the public's
reaction to a star; the second, to learn what
the people who make pictures think of
them. This is a good system, Joe says, and
he ought to know, because he has found
many outstanding recording artists in this
manner.
"It's a great game," is the way Joe
describes his business. But it is more than
that. It's a tough game, and a fast one,
and on,e that few men could successfully
handle. And it is one that Perry has done
well for many years.
What the future holds for Joe is a subject
about which he refuses to speculate. There
is one thing quite certain, however, and it is
that "Decca Joe" Perry will never get talent
scouting out of his blood. As Joe puts it
he's "just a human blood-hound"

Hammergren Says
24 Records Best
NORTH TONAWANDA, N. Y. - Ex-
haustive surveys have definitely proved that
24 record phonographs are the ideal ma-
chines for maximum earnings. This fact was
made known recently by M. G. Hammer-
gren, sales manager of the Rudolph WUI-
litzer Company.
"We have definitely determined," Ham-
mergren states, "That 24 records enable
Wurlitzer music merchants to accomplish
several objectives-all of which put more
profits in their pockets.
"By using 24 records the operator is able
to put on his phonographs the records he
knows will get a big play. In the second
place he leaves room for the records which
he feels may not be so hot but which the
location owners demand.
"In the third place, this greater carrying
capacity enables him to use up records that
may be scratched or damaged on one side.
And, through the use of 24 records, the
operator is allowed a wider diversification
of music from the location patron's view-
point, who finds more records that he de-
sires to hear and spends more money in the
phonograph.
"Wurlitzer first introduced 24 records,
and the practical use of such a machine has
been proven through use. Today, the Wur-
litzer Company is the only manufacturer of
phonographs offering a 24 record machine
and the demand has grown steadily, prov-
♦
ing that the idea is practical."
Three Little Fishies
Leads to Murder
LANSING, Kansas - "He kept singing
the "Three Little Fishies" until I was
nearly nuts. He wouldn't change his tune
so I killed him."
With that terse statement, Roosevelt
.Briaco, negro serving a life sentence in
the Kansas State Penitentiary, explained
why he fatally stabbed Theodore Morrison,
another colored inmate, in a fight inside
the prison walls.
