Gem of Them All!
JOHNNY JOHNSON (0) 7-10-12
STARDUST ON THE MOON (FT)
IN A LITTLE CAROLINA TOWN (FT)
Straight dance tunes. Nothing fancy or out
of the ordinary about this recording, but it Is
a good dance disc.
CHICK BULLOCK (0) 7-11-03
BLOSSOMS ON BROADWAY (FT)
YOU CAN'T STOP ME FROM
DREAMIN' (FT)
Swellegant foxtrots. Bullock, American Rec-
ord's ace doubler, comes through on this disc
with two dandy numbers. Good.
DICK McDONOUGH (0) 7-11-02
THAT OLD FEELING (FT)
THE BIG APPLE (FT)
Hotcha ... and how! McDonough brings to
the wax two crazy numbers but you can't
miss by using them. First side is the cur-
rently popular number. Second side Is the
craze of the day. Vocals by Howard Phillips
aTe not to be sneered at! Recommended.
BERNIE CUMMINS (0) 7-11-06
MAMA, I W ANNA MAKE RHYTHM (FT)
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN HEAVEN (FT)
Nice foxtrot disc. Smooth, even style of Ber-
nie Cummins cannot help but please. Good.
VICTOR
GUY LOMBARDO (0) 25659
BLOSSOMS ON BROADWAY (FT)
MY SWISS HILL Y BILLY (FT)
Unusually beautiful melodies played at a
medium slow tempo with Lebert Lombardo on
the vocals of the first and the male trio on
the second. Good.
CALI-GATTUSO (N) 25662
A STUDY IN BROWN (FT)
SATAN TAKES A HOLIDAY (FT)
Guitar duets. The nimble fingers of Johnnie
Cali and Tony Gattuso create an unusual ver-
sion of these two currently popular ditties.
Good.
HAL KEMP (0) 25665
I STILL LOVE TO KISS YOU GOOD-
NIGHT (FT)
I'D LIKE TO SEE SAMOA OF
SAMOA (FT)
.
Kemp's distinctive band offer two from the
film, "52nd Street." Sweet musicin the inimi-
table Kempian manner.
LIONEL HAMPTON (0) 25666
I SURRENDER, DEAR (FT)
PIANO STOMP (FT)
Victor calls this "Sweet Capitulation." It's
Hampton at the vibraphone and his ork. back-
ing him up, while on the second side he
jumps to the piano. Just fair .
BUNNY BERIGAN (0) 25667
SWEET VARSITY SUE' (FT)
WHY TALK ABOUT LOVE? (FT)
The 20th Century-Fox flikker, "Life Begins at
College," is responsible for this pair of ditties.
Berigan and his outfit impart a typical colle-
giate swing to the numbers. Good.
RONNIE MUNRO-NICK LaROCCA (0) 25668
VIENI . . . VIENI (FT)
FIDGETY FEET (FT)
One of England's outstanding bands is fea-
tured on the first side, doing the currently
popular European musical craze. Al Bowlly
does the vocals. Absolutely tops. Second side
features the Original Dixieland Band and
brings forth the hot clarinet of Larry Shields,
who is just as good today as he was twenty
, years ago. Nice record.
BUNNY BERIGAN (0) 25664
EBB TIDE (FT)
GEE! BUT IT'S GREAT TO MEET A
FRIEND (FT)
He can play them slow and sweet or let
loose in fast swing tempo. This record attests
to the versatility of Mr. Berigan. Nice disc
and the vocals on the second side come in for
a special Hurrah!
"FATS" WALLER (0) 25672
BEAT IT OUT (FT)
YOU'VE GOT ME UNDER YOUR
THUMB (FT)
Clever novelty number on the first side.
"Fats" tells you all about it as the record un-
winds. A real s'w inger. Second side is a good
running mate. An operator's record.
TOMMY DORSEY (0) 25673
TEARS IN MY HEART (FT)
THE LADY IS A TRAMP (FT)
Made to order numbers for the vocals of
Edythe Wright. The Clambake Seven strut
their stuff as accompanists. An engaging rec-
ord.
LIONEL HAMPTON (0) 25674
BABY, WON'T YOU PLEASE COME
HOME? (FT)
AFTER YOU'VE GONE (FT)
A jam band lets loose and the results are
on this record as damning evidence. Only
where they go for low-down swing stuff will
this one score any deqree of success.
PAUL WHITEMAN (0) 25675
COQUETTE (FT)
THERE AIN'T NO SWEET MAN THAT'S
_. WORTH THE SALT OF MY TEARS (FT)
A reissue of a disc that should -go well right
now. "Coquette" is coming back strong, and
the way Bix Beiderbecke, Tommy Dorsey,
Henry Busse, and the rest of the boys that
were in Whiteman's band then, put it over is
simply- magnifice",t. Second side brings Harry
Barris, Al Rinker and Bing Crosby, the then
Rhythm Boys, vocalizing. Very fine .
VOCAUON
TOMMY TUCKER (0) 3667
REMEMBER ME? (FT)
AM I IN LOVE? (FT)
Two from "Mr. Dodd Takes the Air." Nicely
balanced band.
Vocals have been given
plenty of attention. Good.
THE RHYTHM WRECKERS (0) 3670
RED-HEADED MUSIC MAKER (FT)
BLUE YODEL No. 3 (FT)
Recorded on the coast, this one brings to
light a pair of semi-hillbilly ditties that might
please the general public. Fair.
AL DEXTER (V) 3676
SWEET LIPS (Kiss My Blues Away)
THE CALICO RAG
Old-time singing. Just average. Dexter tries
hard and gets across fairly well. Material he
is using holds him down.
MAXINE sui-try AN (0) 3679
ANNIE LAURIE -(FT)
BLUE SKIES (FT)
This one tops the 75 centers. Maxine and
her ark . turn out a marvelous disc combining
two well-known tunes. "Annie" in foxtrot
tempo is really good. Get this.
SAMMY KAYE (0) 3681
AVALON (FT)
JOSEPHINE (FT)
Different from the average foxtrot. . . . and
delightfully different, too! Everything is A-I
on this recording. Recommended.
HOOSIER HOT SHOTS (N) 3683
GOOFUS
RUNNIN' WILD
Hot dance with singing. Way below the
average Hot Shot recording. This one fails
miserably because there is not much novelty
instrumental work and a very limited amount
of vocals.
