• “ Get ready for a big surprise!”
With this warning, Ray Moloney,
President of the Bally Manufacturing
Company, proceeded to “ shoot the
works” regarding the new “ Rocket”
machine.
“ Yes, it’s a pin game,” Mr. Mo
loney continued, “ but it’s different
than any pin game you ever saw.
Rocket actually gives the skillful
player a chance to get six automatic
payouts on one coin. Think that
over! Six separate payouts during
one game played with ten balls. Not
only that, but the payouts increase in
value as the player shows more and
more skill. And they are paid auto
matically, practically dropping right
into the player’s hands.
“ Don’t confuse Rocket with any
so-called coin-divider machine or with
machines that pay out automatic
jack-pots when the player hits a cer
tain difficult pocket. Rocket rewards
are all based on numerical scores,
which experience has proven to be the
most popular with the public. But
they are paid out automatically, im
mediately and progressively during
the course of the game. Scoring pock
ets do not have to be made in any par
ticular order. Regardless of the order
in which the various holes are made,
the Rocket mechanism registers every
successful shot, adds up the score,
and the minute the player is entitled
to a reward the correct amount is au-\
tomatically released. Then, if the
next ball or two raises the score suffi
ciently to claim a higher reward, ad
ditional coins are automatically paid
out.
The lowest winning score pays out
two coins. The next score pays out
two more coins in addition to those
already received. If the player suc
ceeds in still further increasing the
score, two more coins pop out. But
he isn’t through yet. He has a chance
to get three more rewards, one of four
coins, one of six coins and one of 14
coins. This last reward is a jack-pot
which can only be won with the last
ball and only when the player has al
ready received all of the previous pay
outs.
“ In so-called closed territory
Rocket is operated with the door of
the payout compartment kept closed
and locked. The merchant may be
given a key to this door in order not
to tie up his cash in rewards. And
even if the operator keeps this key,
this feature eliminates all arguments
about the amount of rewards paid
out. The operator simply reimburses
the merchant by handing him the con
tents of the payout box, and the con
tents of the cash box is the split in

accordance with the commission
agreement between the location and
the operator.
“ At a small additional cost, Rocket
can be equipped, with an automatic,
register that, not only records every
coin played, but also every reward
made. This feature is the first device
ever used which gives the operator of
large routes complete and absolute
protection. He can check at any time
and find out just what his machines
are taking in and paying out.
“ In addition to the anti-tilting de
vice on the top of the machine, for
the purpose of warning the player,
Rocket is equipped with a new super
sensitive, four-way mechanism that
locks the payout the minute the ma
chine is tilted. Last coin played is
always in sight. A feature of Rocket
is that, after the machine has been
tilted, the player can continue to play,
the score will be registered, but no
coins will be paid out.
“ From the way orders are coming
in on Rocket as a result of the adver
tising we have done so far, we are
confident that this machine will ex
ceed in volume any we have ever pro
duced. This is the first announcement
we have made revealing the Rocket
payout system, and in spite of the
scanty information we have given out
to date, apparently the trade has
sensed that Rocket is designed to fill
the demand for a game of this type.”
