“Nickle”— A Six-Letter
Word Meaning
“Woodpecker"
Pittsburgh, Pa., Aug. 4. — The
City of Pittsburgh’s recently in
stalled parking meters went into
operation today. Each meter had
the following sign affixed to it,
“Nickle or Five Cents, Parking
One Hour.” Many of the motorists
did not really make any attempt to
notice the first word in the sign.
According to Webster and other
famed lexicographers, the word
“nickle” means a green woodpeck
er.
Imagine anyone stuffing a
green woodpecker, feathers and
all, into a parking meter coin
chute. It certainly was an “1” of
a transposition.
