AUTOMATIC AGE
Sam Taran Puts “Punch”
In His Sales
^ H E business career of Sam Taran
is even better than the usual suc
cess story.
H is first money was
earned as a newsboy. A t 15 years of
age, he started boxing professionally
— one year later Taran was fighting
the lightweight champion of Canada.
It was a 10-round, no-decision right.
Sam tells us he had over 200 matches
during his boxing career and was
known as “ Sammy T errin .” H is ad

larger office. Said he: “It seems the
more space we get, the more we
need!”
Mayflower handles all M ills equip
ment— Bells, tables, phonographs, all
coin operated equipment. About the
Throne of Music, Sam said: “I think
it’s the best in the country. Sell an
operator ju st one Throne of Music
and he is sold for good. The cash-
box tells the tale!”
Sam is a fine looking 192-pounder,
a snappy dresser, who makes a fetish
Sam, his attractive wife,
and two children.
It is commonplace to hear about a
newsboy becoming a successful busi
ness man, but few boxers have ever
made the grade. So Sam is entitled
to double credit. He is now Presi
dent of the Mayflower Novelty Co.,
St. Paul, Minn., and Mills north
western distributor, covering Minne
sota, North and South Dakota, Iowa,
and the western part of Wisconsin.
He employs 22 people and is con
stantly expanding into larger quar
ters.
Mayflower Novelty was organized
in 1926. Sam’s partner and top sales
man is Herman Pastor, who sells
about a quarter of a million dollars
worth of merchandise a year! C a rry
ing one of the largest inventories of
any coin machine company, it is pos
sible for an operator to get prac
tically anything he wants. Six sales
man are on the road all the time.
Next year Taran anticipates they
w ill require a larger warehouse and
Scum Taran, president of Mayflower Novelty, St. Paul, writes a check for
a carload of Throne of Music phonos in the office of Hayden Mills, secre
tary of Mills Novelty Co. S t a n d in g V in c e Shay, sales mana,ger, and
