AUTOMATIC AGE
Bally “Hawthorne” Is 10-Way
Multiple
ULTIPLE earnings will be big
ger than ever in 1939”, declared
Ray Moloney, president of Bally Mfg.
Company, as he announced the re
lease of Bally’s “Hawthorne” 10-way
multiple with double reserve feature.
“New tested money-making fea
tures,” Ray continued, “have been
built into ‘Hawthorne’ with the re
sult that ‘Hawthorne’ collections make
the very best ‘Grandstand’ and ‘This
tledowns’ collections look like papa’s
pocket-book the day before Christmas.
And I don’t mean just because it’s a
10-way job. No, the fact that play
ers can play up to 10 nickels a game
is not what makes ‘Hawthorne’ such
a high-speed money-maker—it’s the
fact that they will invariably play at
least 5 nickels every game. This is
due to what we call the ‘fifth nickel
insurance’ idea.
“To explain ‘fifth nickel insurance’
it is first necessary to point out that
‘Hawthorne’ has two complete re

ated with or without multiple and
also with or without the reserve; and
adjustments go farther than ever be

serve feature mechanisms, instead of
one— both climbing up, up, up toward
a $50.00 top. This in itself is a pow
erful repeat play feature—because,
even though one reserve has been hit,
the other reserve is still on th job.
“ A reserve award can be won only
when the feature light is lit. This
lights up at mystery intervals often
enough to stimulate play. But it al
ways lights up when the fifth nickel
is deposited, and then remains lit un
til the end of the game. Thus 5
nickels guarantee the player a crack
at both reserves—certainly a real in
centive to play, at least, 5 nickels. On
test locations ‘fifth nickel’ insurance
has worked out exactly like its name
— insurance that ‘Hawthorne’ will av
erage approximately twenty-five cents
per game.
“Mechanically, ‘Hawthorne’ is a
job Bally can really brag about.
We’ve given it the works and we know
it’s right. As to flexibility and ad
Reconditioned Cig
Machines Offered
Brooklyn, N. Y.— Commenting on
the reconditioning cigaret merchan
dising machines he now has in stock,
Dave Robbins said, “Many locations
for cigaret vending machines are
available where it does not pay the
operator to install one of the new
high-priced machines. However, such
locations would prove extremely prof
itable if the operator could get a good
low priced cigaret machine.
“Taking this fact into consider
ation, D. Robbins & Co., Brooklyn, are
offering operators perfectly recondi
tioned cigaret machines at prices well
worth looking into. These machines
are available in both 15 and 20-cent
models. We guarantee that the ma
chines look and operate exactly like
new. As only 100 machines are being
offered at this very low price, wise
operators should grab them up quick
ly.”
