they turned around and did the very same
thing as the people they made me sue,
but I got a better scale now than any of
them. Look here” ! whereupon friend
Tatham poked a hack saw blade down the
penny slot, then reached around where the
door was still open and took it out. “ See,
it don’t do any harm. Soda straws and
paper don’t either. You can put the penny
in before you get on the platform or after
and you get your weight just the same.
No, you can’t weigh two people for the
same penny. See this little thing!” and I
saw it, and it worked perfectly. The lock
ing arrangement was another clever piece
of design and the dial could be changed
from a revolving dial to a stationary dial
with the hand involving.
I suggested it was worth advertising and
that he ought to subscribe for A utomatic
A ge . He replied, “ Say, do you know it?
I haven’t got a dollar. All these patents
and law suits cost a lot of money and I
spent everything I had finishing this, but
I’m going to advertise all right, because
I think this will sell. You know, I just
like to do this. I was in vaudeville for
18 years. Started when I was nine years
old with the Ten Flying Craigs. Rolled
up in a ball and let them toss me on their
feet. Then I was an acrobat and gymnast.
I learned mechanics in England and Penn
sylvania and always liked to play with it.
See that picture? That is the English
Gymnastic Team at the 1908 Olympic
Games and that medal is the Olympic
medal.” The medal referred to was on Mr.
Tatham. “ I was all over the Orpheum and
Pantages circuits but when I got shot I
couldn’t do that any more so I turned to
mechanics. I made the Wrigley gum ma
chine. Here is one of them. You can
have that one and see how it is made.
I also made 1, 2, 3, ball gum machine.
Come over and see me again any time.”

He has what the world is always glad
to pay money for— daring ideas, real skill
and ability in a lot of lines, delightful
personality, the instict to originate, not
to copy, and last but not least, the art
of making friends. Incidentally he has a
scale that I would buy for myself.

Norman Tatham could not subscribe for
a magazine last night but he has made
plenty of money and lost plenty and he
is not worrying one particle about it. He
even said about one of the members of
the firm who, as he claimed, had double
crossed him. “ You know for all of it, I
can’t help but think a lot of the fellow
even yet. You know, we used to play
cards together.”
