for skirts was a very profitable business.
This binding was put around the hem of
the skirts to protect them. The flapper
came along and out went the manufacturers
of skirt binding.
No man knows when he will find his
business absolete. No man came predict
that, in twelve months from now, he will
have the flourishing business he has today,
because of the ever-present dangers of
obsolescence. The patent office it should
be noted is issuing eighty thousand patents
a year.
Making a Quality Appeal
As experts in reading the handwriting
on the wall, sales managers must con
stantly review in their minds the steps they
can take to ward off these dangers. For
instance, the sales manager who can find
a use for his product that makes for the
comfort and convenience of the public has
found a great ally in the war against obso
lescence. A few typical examples of this
include the safety razor, zipper, closed car,
mechanical dish washer, suction sweeper,
plug telephone and wooden golf tees.
The appeal to better quality is an im

portant weapon also. When sales managers
are tempted by men in the field to build
down to a price, they have reached the
point where it is all-important for them to
consider the feasibility of building up to
a standard. Today there is a very large
purchasing power in the United States that
prefers the appeal of a standard of quality
much more than it does the appeal of price.
Take my own case in building a new
home. Concealed radiators were installed,
in preference to open radiators. One or
ganization sold me a circulating cold water
system so that there would be cold water
upstairs and down, without going to the
refrigerator. Arrangements were made to
keep the house cool as well as warm. Be
cause of their attractive appearance, it was
decided to have rainbow colored tiles. Then
my wife had to have colored towels, sheets,
blankets, etc. The man who had that idea
of utilizing the appeal of color was the
one who was fighting against obsolescence.
Wrought iron railing was used instead of
wooden railing, steel window sashes in
stead of wood, and, finally, roller screens,
invisible and out of the way, which do
not have to be taken on and off. This
