chiefs, is rarely offered in vending
machines.
A few o f the more enterprising to­
bacco shops have installed vending
machines fo r matches and postage
stamps. The sale o f matches is a
Government m onopoly and it is said
that the government has not favored
the use o f these machines fo r the
reason that six distinct types o f
matches are offered, the selling fa ­
cilities o f which it wishes to make
equal.
Postage stamps are sold by post
offices and by tobacco shops. Pres­
ent postage rates are 50 centimes
fo r domestic letters and 1.50 francs
fo r foreign letters. I f there were
any assurance that these rates would

be maintained the use o f v e n d i n g ma­
chines fo r stamps might be made
more general, especially in post of­
fices where the purchase o f a stamp
often necessitates considerable wait­
ing.
Vending machines fall under item
“ 646.” Those operated by clockwork
or electricity now pay 36 francs pef
kilo. Others pay 3.52 francs per kilo*

American firms should appoint
agent already handling other bank
and store equipment.
