P. C. Smith, well known to the
operating trade, has invented a hand
coin counter which he calls the
“ Presto.” The counter consists o f
two pieces, one is an auminum

ters from his own address, 901 La
fayette Parkway, Chicago. The illus
trations which Mr. Smith furnished
fo r our patent depai’tment show how
handy this device is. Although an
nounced only ten days ago the sale
o f the Presto has run to several gross

Chicago operator bought six fo r his

holes have been bored to receive 25
pennies each. The holes penetrate
through the block so that all the
operator has to do to count his pen

of the little device, slide the block o f
wood out and lift it up leaving fou r
stacks o f 25 pennies. F or a useful
accessory to the vending machine
business this Presto counter is cer

has been set so low that it is cheaper
than a good screw driver and just as
necessary.

“ Hiring Fairs” are still held in the
large country towns o f England. All
farm laborers and boys gather in the
streets o f the nearest towns and wait
fo r someone to employ them fo r the
next six months. A fter the question
o f wages is settled and a shilling giv
en as guaranty, everyone joins in
merry-making.
