ing weighed and promptly spent his
cent.
“ See that?” exclaimed the drug
gist.
“ He saw you getting weighed and
so he did it. He probably had no in
tention of doing so and doesn’t know
why he did it. That’s one reason why
sales run into such figures. Irve seen
a crowd of 15 line up before a scales
just because the first one happened
to
attract
attention.
Somebody
stopped to watch; then three or four
got around and the next thing we
had a crowd blocking the aisle.’
Since the introduction, last year,
o f the scale which issues a printed
ticket giving the weight and date in
stead o f the old familiar dial, which
everybody within gunshot could and
did read, business has picked up
amazingly. In fact, it never was bad.
Now it is better—and then some.
The old-style dial machine was too
public for a person whose generous
proportions might send the hand
climbing into the three century alti
tude. How many snickers have come
from onlookers when some buxom
belle stepped coyly on the platform
and straightaway the hand shot
around to 300? Patronage from the
heavy-weights under these conditions
never equalled that from the slims
and mediums.
With the advent of the ticket-
issuing scale which makes weighing a
purely private ad painless operation
for said heavyweights and the big,
unexplained interest of the general
public in its daily weight, the lowly
copper has grown into a beautiful
golden stream, pouring slowly but
steadily into storekeepers’ coffers.—
