Venders Taken Back to
Vending Machines
Their Places
Are Hit by Ruling
If you have even, your mouth
watering for a chew of taffy, a square
of chicle or a mint lozenge, inserter!
a copper in the slot of a machine de
signed automatically to deliver such
sweetmeats, and the dam thing has
refused to work—
If you, having been gypped, tricked,
cheated and defrauded out o f your
red cent, and—
With a genuine grievance, com
bined with a sense of disappointment
and intolerance against all inanimate
objects, pounded the recalcitrant ven
der with your fists until the skin
peels off—
And if, perhaps, you have thrown
good money after bad, a second time
to be denied the titbit—
And, baffled and with no recourse
whatsoever, you have cursed, damned,
exercrated and berated such a moun
tebank of a machine, you will be in
terested in the following:
Ruling that failure to eject its
commodity on the insertion of a coin
classifies the machine as a gambling
device, Sheriff Hoffman of Cook
county, 111., has begun to confiscate
them; has seized many thus far and
intends to impound them.
Seven of these inanimate lawbreak
ers were picked up yesterday in road
houses near Thornton, Dolton and
Riverdale, and hereafter, Sheriff
Hoffman says, no mint will mean
no go.
Manufacturers of the vending de
vices have protested against the clas
sification, laying the blame on imper
fect mechanism.

Missoula, Mont.— After enjoying
an over-Sunday rest, the 20 slot ma
chines which were seized Saturday
afternon
by
Constable Thomas
Bishop once again are at their places
of business.
The constable returned them to
their owners or operators yesterday
afternoon, after a conference with
County Attorney Dwight N. Mason
and John L. Campbell, who was hired
by Matt Whaley, in charge of many
of the machines.
It is reported that Bishop believed
he had only to file a complaint
against the owners of the machines.
Incidentally, many of the machines
had been in court before. That was
shortly after they made their appear
ance, and Sheriff J. A. Rice rounded
them up. It was to no avail, how
ever, for they were held to be mer
chandise vending machines and there
fore legal.
The machines were taken from the
Brunswick candy shop, “ Dutch’s”
place, Northern hotel 2, Atlantic
hotel 2, Western hotel 2, stage depot,
Pastime Club 2, Rochester pool hall,
Donovan & Hickey cigar store, Mis
soula club 2, Scandia hotel 2, Ex
change bar 2, and French club.
