fo r a gas mask w hich w ould seem
high ly u sefu l to the operators ch a rg ­
in g the latest fo rm o f perfum e ven ­
dors. F rom the looks o f the fe llo w
in the mask, he has a profitable route.

The m odern oil station has a few
vending problem s. T he device show n
in patent N o. 1,590,578, to C. W .
H arris and J. M. R enolds, is evident­
ly intended to overcom e one o f these.

A n oth er P rotector
It appears that our friend from
Canada (m entioned a b ove) is n ot the
on ly one w ho is a little bit leary o f
the fractu red egg. W e find another
m an, a citizen o f the U nited States
this tim e, w ho has an e g g p rotector
m ade o f coiled w ire and p rotectin g
the
individual
egg
(presum ably
against ex p losion ).
A m achine provided w ith an in­
clined m agazine
body,
a
spring
pressed m agazine back, and tw o
perm anent h oldin g stops at the fron t
o f the m agazine, is show n in patent
N o. 1,590,925, to D. K. Cam pbell. A n
ingenious and sim ple lever operated
m echanism m oves the article in the
m agazine to one side to clear the
first stop, and then to the opposite
side to clear the second stop, thus
releasing it through a slot. T he de­
vice is evidently especially adapted
fo r handling book s or other flat arti­
cles w hich can be stacked edgewise.
E igh t states received 75 per cent
o f the im m igrants arriving in the
U nited States in the nine-m onth pe­
riod ending M arch 31.
