Gum Magnate
Advocates Quality
From Alfred W. Blendow, Presi
dent o f the National Gum Company,
and Secretary o f the National A sso
ciation o f chewing gum manufactur
ers we have received the follow ing
interesting letter:
“ W e agree with you heartily on the
question o f quality. It is unfortunate
as you say that a good many o f the
manufacturers in the business are
sacrificing quality fo r price, but
don’t blame it all on the manufac
turer. It is the operator as well. It
has always been the habit o f the
operator to try and play one manu
facturer against the other, trying to
beat them down in price and the re
sult is that prices have been beaten
down to such a point that a manu
facturer cannot make a reasonable
profit on his merchandise. Particu
larly is this a fa ct in the manufacture
o f ball chewing gum. There are not
many manufacturers who have stood
off this trend in the “ game” and there
are v eiy few who have stuck to qual
ity. W e know positively that the bal-.
ance sheet o f The National Gum
Company would show a very much
more substantial profit at the end o f
every month if we had followed the
tendency o f the times to give the
trade anything as long as they called
it chewing gum and let it go at that.
W e have been put in a position where
we are giving real quality and still
meeting competing prices. The posi
tion is not one to be envied from the
standpoint o f profits we can assure
you. But we have faith in the busi
37
ness and hopes that things will
change.
“ The remedy lies in a “ get to
gether” ” o f not only the manufac
turers but also the operators. I f both
factions could be brought together
and “ chew the matter over” at a
pow wow, we believe that it would
not be long before things changed fo r
the better.”
The earliest weather forecasting
service was established in France as
a direct result o f a destructive storm
that raged over the Black Sea in
1854.
