From riding herd on longhorn
steers to running seven insuraRce
companies to distributing coin ma-
chines isn't exactly the typical way
for entering the trade. But Dan
King III, president of the recently
formed Western States Distribut-
ing Company in San Francisco, en-
tered the business in just that
fashion.
King hails from . Texas, where
his family name is as well known
as Dave Crockett. On his father's

ranch King punched cattle until he
got the itch to see what life in the
city was like. At that point he
jumped a train for Oklahoma and
found himself selling crop insur-
ance during the flush pre-harvest
season.
, Within a few years, King had
organized seven insurance com-
panies of his own-two in Okla-
homa, one in Texas and four in
California. He stayed in the insur-
ance business until 1940, when he
decided to retire and take things
easy. That year he sold his com-
panies and sat down to rest in his
Beverly Hills, Calif., home.
But last year, King tired of hav-
ing nothing- to do but hunt and
fo,h and decided to get into the
coin machine business "because
things move fac:tt and the future
looks excentionally bright."
In October of last year he set up
the Western States Distributing
Company with main offices in San
Francisco. The firm iR now dis-
tributor fo:r the Pace Manufactur-
ing Comnany in the 11 States west
of the Rocky Mountains.

flying 14 years ago so he could
cover the ground better between
his California home and his 80,000
acre ranch in Texas. Besides his
distributing company, ranch and
various other real estate holdings,
King carries a deputy sheriff's
badge as a full-fledged member of
the sheriff's air squadron of Los
Angeles County.
Dan King III has been busy fly-

his distributors in eleven Western
