button on the mech. The grip-
per motor should now move. If
it does not, go to the next step in
the error code chart. Continue
until the problem is found. That's
it! It's that easy.

ERRORS
Another diagnostic feature built
into the SyberSonic system is the
automatic logging of CD playing
errors, missing discs and locked
tracks. This information can be
used to determine if an individual
CD or the CD M-12 is causing
playing errors. In order to be
able to determine what is caus-
ing a playing problem, it is first
necessary to define terms.
A PLAYING ERROR occurs when
the computer receives data from
the CD player that is not sequen-
tial. In other words, the laser
"skipped" ahead or behind of
where it was reading . Playing
errors are found in Quick Find
112. To view additional playing
errors, (if they exist) use the Right
Pages button. Following is an
example of a playing error dis-
play.

A LOCKED TRACK is an indi-
vidual song that has had playing
errors which exceeded the pre-
determined number of "skips"
more than two times. Once
locked, this song cannot be se-

locked track is attempted the dis-

WHAT CAN CAUSE Disc ERR.oRS?
Now that we know what each
item means, lets look at the pos-
sible causes of each.
A Playing Error can be caused
by a dirty disc, a scratched disc
or a dirty CD player lens. This
error can also be caused by the
CD not being properly clamped
to the player spindle thus not al-
lowing it to spin properly.
A Missing Disc error is caused by
the laser not being able to read
the table of contents of a disc ei-
ther when the CD was mapped
or when a song was selected from
that disc. This error can be
caused by an empty slot, a dirty
disc, a scratched disc or a dirty
CD player lens. This error can
also be caused by the CD not
being properly clamped to the
player spindle thus not allowing
it to spin properly.
A Locked Track can be caused
by a dirty disc, a scratched disc
or a dirty CD player lens. This
error can also be caused by the
CD not being properly clamped
to the player spindle thus not al-
lowing it to spin properly.
TROUBLESHOOTING Disc PROB-
LEMS
Now I hear you saying, "Wait a
minute! All three problems can
be caused by the same thing!
How can I tell what's wrong?"
It's easy. Look at the disc errors;
track lockouts and missing discs
then note how many there are .
A FEw CD's SKIP
If all you find are a few playing
errors, chances are the only prob-
lem is a dirty disc or possibly a
few dirty discs. Try cleaning
them and then play the tracks
that were indicated in the play-
ing errors. (Since you're there,
you might as well clean the lens

SILICONE
THE WONDER
BREAKOFFS
Many times in doing repairs we
come across components that
have cracked their solder and
come free from the PC board, or
sometimes they have broken off
their lead right at the board.
As Mr. Messana noted in his
Rowe Changer article in the May
issue of Star Tech journa~ often
these broken-off parts are the
larger heavier ones.
SANDIES
Common examples include big
five and ten watt rectangular re-
sistors, which we usually call
"sand blocks," and things like
TO-220 transistors and voltage
regulators, especially those wear-
ing heat sinks on their tabs. Any-
thing that isn't tiny but is sup-
ported by its own leads is a can-
didate for this type of failure.
Goop
mechanical stress off the connec-
tions and the heat from the com-
ponent is also kept off the board.
N
ot only can
silicone help
prevent
failures, but it can
even allow parts to
continue to function,
instead of leaving
the equipment
down waiting for a
replacement part.
Sounds like wonder
goop to me!

MOUNTING
ENTER mE
Inspecting many video monitors
reveals power resistors mounted
with a clamp to the chassis and
wires to the PC board. This solu-
tion does two things, it takes the
It isn't always convenient to
mount everything to a chassis
wall so we need other strategies.
Enter Silicone. It really is the
wonder goop. Silicone sealer,
aquarium sealer, silicone caulk,
it goes by many names. It comes
in small squeeze tubes like tooth-
paste, and in larger tubes for use
in caulking guns.
BUY CHEAP
We use it a lot, so we buy the
larger tubes. I buy whatever
brand is on sale, usually three or
four dollars a tube tops. You want
the stuff that is 100% silicone,
though it may or may not say
caulk on the label.
TYPES
There are many kinds of caulk,
some even containing silicone,
but the 100% is the only one to
use. Don't pay extra for a lengthy
guarantee or other claim. If I
were using it to seal my windows,
I might be concerned, but the
cheap stuff I buy has never let me
down just sticking things together
indoors. A caulking gun can be
had cheap, in fact I even see them
at the dollar store.

Doesn't matter. What does mat-
ter is keeping it fresh. Make sure
