SAVING THOSE OLD DAVTONAISEGA
STEERING WHEELS AND GEARBOXS
DAYTONA GEAR BOXES
STEERING WHEELS
While most people are happy to
just throw the old steering wheels
away, there are some people who
don't like to waste anything.
Look at these pictures for a quick
example of how you can make a
perfectly good hub to use with a
relacement HAPP steering wheel
(part no: 50-8486-00).
You will also need to purchase
the bolts (part no: 95-8030-00)
and the cap to cover bolts (part
no: 50-8487-116).
To start with peel the rubber off
the old wheel, if there is any left
then cut the centre out using an
oxy torch or you could take the
easy way out and take it down to
your local engineering shop and
get them to cut it out for you. It
should measure 65mm across
and you should be left with a flat
bit (see picture) which goes to the
bottom when you fit the new
wheel, then place the new Happ
wheel on top of hub (flat surface)
and mark the 3 holes, drill and
tap to suit the bolts, bolt together
and refit as necessary.
We nomally wait until we have
collected 10 old wheels and get
them done all together.

It seems there is hundreds of
these old Daytona gearboxes sit-
ting around taking up space on
work benches everywhere. We
have been able to save a lot of
these with a few modifications.
To start with we always remove
all the screws, drilling out the
holes and fitting new high tensile
bolts with ni-lock nuts, the size
we use is 4mm x 15mm and 4mm
x 25 mm for the stopper blocks.
We also find that we need to weld
around under the top plate, they
normally crack or break because
the old screws have come loose.
We've had new black plastic cov-
ers made at our local marine win-
dows shop out of thin black

people who don't
like to waste any-
thing. 11
We have also found that by cut-
ting the wire ties that hold the
wires close to the switch, it seems
to stop a lot of those switches and
wiring harnesses from breaking.

In relation to the article in your Novem-
ber 1997 "Troubleshooting Gun Games
Gun Problems: Symptoms/Solutions".
We have a number of concerns regard-
ing this article. There are a couple of er-
rors in this tech bulletin. We do under-
stand that this is somewhat of a generic
article covering Optic Gun PCBs other
than ours but a majority of the informa-
tion stated in the article seems to target
our boards.
First of all the value of the inductor
(choke) is 5.6mH not 5.2mH as stated in
the body of the text. The actual color
code on the inductors used on our PCBs
is wide silver, green, blue, red, narrow
silver, not yellow, brown, violet. This
would yield a value of .470mH instead of
5.6mH. Further on all the PCBs we have
ever looked at as returns from customers
we have never seen the leads on this de-
vice actually break off. This has been
noted as happening on the Optic Sensor,
but not the inductor.
Second on all the inductors I have ever
measured using a DMM (Digital
MultiMeter) I got a resistance reading
(ohms) in the range of 43 to 73 ohms, not
22 to 26 as stated in the article. The only
true indicator of the inductor being open
is if you show a resistance reading in the
range of 100,000 ohms or higher.

Third as is the case with most electronic
equipment it is always best to replace ex-
isting parts with an exact replacement.
In a couple areas in this article they are
recommending replacements with non-
standard parts. Not only can this result
in erratic or non operation it will void
any warranty which might apply to this
device.
Some of the modifications may work for
Optic Gun PCBs used by other OEM
manufacturers, but I would not recom-
mend some of these for the Happ Optic
Gun PCBs.
