a circuit of discrete parts. These
look like transistors, often with
too many legs. Generally they
will have a number beginning
with STR. You pretty much have
to use the real part here.
... continued from previous page.
Zener diodes are the other spe-
cial type we find. Voltage and
wattage are the parameters here.
The voltage is the reason we use
zeners in the first place, so always
use the same voltage rating. One
watt and half watt zeners are the
most common, though we see
some five watt types. Due to the
way they are used in circuits, ze-
ner subs should be limited to
parts with the same ratings. You
can usually get away with sub-
bing a one watt for a half watt
type.
FUSES?
Just use the right one, it isn't
worth the risk.
Many monitors use a dedicated
voltage regulator IC rather than

You will find that it is not hard to
build up your own parts kit that
will help you win most of the
battles. A few types of transistors
in each of four or five case styles
covers a lot of the transistor subs.
If you stock both 160 and 250
volt filter caps, ask yourself why.
The 250 volt ones will cover all
the spots. Same with
rectifiers. If you stock
the 1N5400 series of
three amp rectifiers, it
is pointless to keep both
50 volt and 400 volt
parts. The 400 volt part
will cover both those
needs.

It is always best to use
the original type parts
in repairs, but when
you can't, you must
make a substitution.
Consider that when
you substitute one part
for another, you are re-
ally doing a small bit of
design engineering on
you own. The more
you learn about parts
and the circuits that use
them, the better engi-
neer you will be.
