1996: A BANNER YEAR FOR THE VIDEO GAME
John Ridgway

1996
It's only natural to look back on
the year, chew on it a bit, and
then make some predictions for
the next year. Usually, of course,
you just wish that you never had
said anything in the first place
because no one really knows
what will happen. But you take
your best shot as they say, so let
me do that for you right now.
industrial and consumer. My fa-
vorites always change, but right
now I'm kind of partial to NEXT
Generation magazine which is,
believe it or not, a consumer
game magazine (hone systems,
the perennial four letter word that
route operators know all too
well). But you know what they
say, keep your "enemies" close.
My boss is good enough to allow
me to subscribe to all kinds of
industry trade magazines, both
Of course, whether or not the
home games are really the opera-
tors culprit will always be a
source of great intense conversa-
tion among industry vets.
What's my position? Well, I cer-
tainly would not be willing to say
that it has been all bad for the
coin-op business. Exposure to
our products cannot possibly be
a negative thing. And quality
products can only help our indus-
try. I read NEXT Generation
because I want to keep abreast
as to what our customers want.
And right now they really want

to play video games. Sony
Playstations and Sega Saturns are
flying out of every retailers door.
That's good!
That is, as long as the manufac-
turers that bring products to the
coin-op industry also read NG
magazine. You see, they would
then know the power the home
systems have. And they also
would be informed as to what
types of games the fickle popula-
tion are currently playing. And
if you were a manufacturer, what
would you then do? Build a bet-
ter mousetrap!
At this point, I'm reading into our
future. I am just about positive
that 1996 will be a boom year for
the video game operator. Public
awareness of video games is at an
all time high.
And if the manufacturers are
reading the consumer magazines
(I'm sure they do) then you will
be seeing games that will be ab-
solutely unbelievable for our in-
dustry; games that you cannot
buy for the current systems be-
cause the technology just won't
be there.
In 1995, our industry began pre-
paring for this scenario. Remem-
ber Super Nintendo? Don't kid
yourself; if you think about it,
those games weren't all that far
behind our games at the time.
Our industry took some tiine to
jump ahead and it was painful
waiting, but we did jump, pulled
ahead, and we're going to do it
again in '96.
Stick with it because later this
year the coin-op business is go-
ing to experience tremendous
growth.
So, sit back, enjoy a beverage,
and play your Sega Saturn or
Playstation with your kid before
he gets bored with it after he sees
what coin-op will have to offer.
'I
Coin-op video games will be
where the excitement is later
this year!
