PROBLEM
SUBJECT
Data East solid state flippers stay-
ing on or not always firing.
Further to my article last month
regarding Gottlieb's Cue Ball
Wizard game locking up, not
kicking out balls and double puls-
ing the ball release coil.
SYMPTOM
Flipper stays on intermittently
after button is released.
UPDATE
CAUSE
The clamping diode may be
open or broken. This causes the
Back-EMF to hold the holding
SCR on. This can happen in any
circuit using an SCR to drive a
coil. (I remember this from the
days I used to work at Xerox on
copiers.) SCR's are tough and
reliable but tricky to work with
sometimes.
SYMPTOM
Flipper not always firing.

After a couple of weeks testing, I
have found that the capacitor will
break down and cause the same
problem. Since them, I've found
the proper value of the varistor -
75 volts - you can use a higher
rated value.
CAUSE
Bad EOS (End-of-Stroke) switch.
This switch is not required unless
the flipper is constantly fired rap-
idly for long periods of time. The
two terminals can be connected
together. Keep extra coils in stock
- just in case.

My previous article stated that
adding a 2.2 uf capacitor across
the contacts on the (B- Relay)
motor control relay, to remove
arcing across the contacts which
causes double pulsing on the ball
release coil.

I strongly recommend checking
the varistors on all Gottlieb
games to prevent any intermit-
tent problems. Look here first.
