We have designed out Opto's to
operate as closely to the action of
a switch as possible and even
more importantly the trouble-
shooting procedure used to diag-
nosis a problem is very similar to
that of a mechanical switch.
SwrrcH TusT:
Blocking the light beam causes the
Opto to respond like a closed
switch, the same as actuating a
mechanical switch.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
1) Enter diagnostics; Switch test.
2) Block beam; does it respond in
test? Yes=OK No=continue
3) Visually inspect transmitter; is
it glowing red? Yes=OK No=Check
2 pin connector for 5vdc.
NOTE
We use Ultra-bright visible red
light L.E.D.'s so that no special-
ized tools are required for trouble-
shooting. They also have a nar-
rower bandwidth when used as a
receiver so that ambient light has
little to no affect on them, unlike
infrared L.E.D.'s which have a
wider bandwidth.
. . .
4) Visually inspect the Receiver
Bd. for damage or loose connec-
tions. Remove the 2-pin connec-
tor with the green and white wire.
Using a jumper wire, short the two
wires together. Does the display
indicate a switch closure?
Yes suspect bad receiver or receiver/
transmitter misalignment.
No suspect open in switch matrix
wiring .
REMEMBER
The transmitter is acting as noth-
ing more than a flashlight -if it is
on, then it is working. If shorting
the Switch Drive/Return lines on
the receiver side together indi-
cates a switch closure, then, like a
bad microswitch, your Receiver
Bd. is bad or misaligned. The cost
is approximately the same as a
microswitch -only the board is
repairable.

AMOA OK's CONTRACT
FOR MAJOR$$ COIN PUSH
Sensing the timing is right for passage of dollar
coin legislation that has long languished in Con-
gress, the Amusement & Music Operators Asso-
ciation (AMOA) has contracted with Valis Associ-
ates, a Washington, D.C. based consulting firm, to
spearhead a major effort for approval of a dollar
coin in the new 104th Congress this year.
"A dollar coin extremely important to the future
of our membership and the industry. The chances
for passage in this political climate are excellent,
but we felt something more was needed than was
done in the past," says Tami Norberg-Paulsen,
AMOA president. "Valis Associates' qualifications
and expertise are highly regarded in the nation's
capital. We feel they will be of great help in secur-
ing passage of a new dollar coin."
AMOA is a strong advocate of the dollar coin at
the grassroots political level, through its Washing-
ton, D.C., activities, and in its support of efforts of
The Coin Coalition, a broad-based Washington
coalition of diverse industries and other interests
seeking passage of a dollar coin. The U.S. is the
only major industrialized nation in the world that
does not have a dollar coin in mass circulation.
With the new Congress in cost saving and balanced
budget modes, AMOA believes the dollar coin is
most certain to receive high profile attention in
upcoming budgetary considerations. The federal
treasury savings from replacing the $1 paper bill
with the $1 coin is conservatively estimated at $395
million a year by U.S. General Accounting Office.
Valis Associates is a public policy consulting firm
serving corporations, trade associations, non-profit
organizations and governmental bodies. AMOA
is a non-profit national trade association comprised
of some 1,700 owners/ operators, distributors and
manufacturers of commercial amusement, music
entertainment and vending equipment.
