Nintendo of America must pay
Alpex Computer Corp. $208.3
million for infringing on a pat-
ented technology used in popu-
lar video games, a federal jury
here said yesterday.
The jury found that Nintendo, of
Redmond, Wash., had willfully
infringed on the Alpex patent for
the technology, which helps
video-game characters move and
interact with each other.
The jury did not find willful in-
fringement against Nintendo's
parent, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of
Kyoto, Japan.
The verdict stunned Nintendo of
America, which dominates the
multi-billion-dollar U.S. home-
video game industry, with 80 per-
cent of the U.S. market. Nintendo
machines are in a third of Ameri-
can homes.

#1 PROBLEM
Ticket jams are the biggest prob-
lem with redemption games. The
jams usually result in broken
ticket guides.
SUBJECT
SOLUTION
The easiest way to clear these
jams is to:
• Remove the top metal guide.
• Use this guide to push the tick-
ets up to the top of the ticket dis-
penser from the front of the door.
• Run the motor until all jammed
tickets are out from between the
rollers.
• Use the metal guide to grab the
tickets . from the top of the dis-
penser and pull them out.
• Now your ticket dispenser
should be clear of all jammed
tickets. Run the motor to be sure.

Journal's Exciting
New Software
on page 16 ...
• Reinstall the metal ticket guide.
ALIGNMENT
If the metal guide is hard to in-
stall, bend the guide with your
thumb on the end closest to the
motor. Installation of ticket guide
should now be easier because the
metal guide will not hit the front
of the dispenser.
Lethal Enforcer gun problems.
CORNER ACCURACY
If you are having problems get-
ting your guns to hit objects in the
corners of the screen, you may
want to install 4 small magnets
that are available from Konami.
THEY WORK
These magnets are placed on the
corners of the CRT and are easy
to install. Field reports indicat
they work well. Contact your dis-
tributor for availability.

HEAD MOLDING
RESULTS
Bluto Head Replacement:
To increase earnings on Popeye,
it is recommended you replace
the Bluto head molding with a
flat screened butyrate which Wil-
liams has made available.
After several months in the field,
I can safely say the new Williams
"Mega Link" flipper upgrades
have eliminated 90% of our flip-
per service calls.
I'm finding a lot of bad Rowe
• decoders going back to the dis-
tributor. This is a very expensive
exchange. If you've tried to get
schematics for Rowe players for
the decoders section, you've
probably reached a dead end.
INSTALLATION NOTE
SOFTWARE
PRINTS
The schematic for the decoder
board used in a Rowe Juke is al-
most worthless. Only one IC is
available (TDA1541) through
any normal channels.
The current software version for
Popeye is L-4
ANIMAL DIVERTOR PLUNGER
The Animal divertor plunger
material was changed to metal
from plastic.
SOURCE
The CDM3 decoder was used in
one of Phillips' home CD play-
ers a few years ago, schematics
are hard to get though.

When you make the change, be
sure to include the new bearing
that rides in the link hole. It's a
few hundreds of an inch larger
and will prevent binding.
CHECK
Also be sure that the inside of the
crank arm that contacts the new
link is not worn. Otherwise, it will
tighten down too much and bind
on the link.
