Most POPULAR LEISURE Act1v1TY
WHAT'S TIIE MOST POPULAR LEISURE ACTIVITY IN JAPAN?
A: DINING OUT.
The leisure industry in Japan re-
vealed a few interesting results in
a recent survey. The industry reg-
istered a growth rate of only 0.1 %
over the previous year.
The Sports sector, in general, is
down. Golf and ski equipment
took a plunge, also golf ranges
and athletic clubs showed a sharp
decline. Only soccer was up. In
the Hobby sector, cameras, audio
equipment and televisions are
stagnant.
Game centers (pachinko) de-
clined. In the Travel sector it was
minus growth for the third con-
secutive year. Hotels, inns and
theme parks suffered through a
tough year.
The Japanese Leisure Develop-
ment center conducted a survey
of trends in 89 different kinds of
leisure activities. The top ten lei-
sure activities in terms of number
of participants were as follows.
(8) Card Games (39.3 million)
(9) Amusement Parks (3.9 mil-
lion)
(10) Music (including listening to
CDs, records, tapes, radio) (3.88
million)
(1) Dining Out (64.6 million)
(2) Domestic Travel (59.2 mil-
lion)
(3) Driving (58.7 million)
(4) Karaoke (52.4 million)
(5) Bars, Nightclubs, Pubs ( 44.8
million)
(6) Zoos, Botanical gardens,
Aquariums, and Museums ( 44.1
million)
(7) Watching Videos ( 43.9 mil-
lion)
This survey was conducted by the
Leisure Development Center, a
non-profit organization affiliated
with the Ministry of International
Trade and Industry. The survey
covers the period January to De-
cember, 1993. Source: JAM 6/94.
