REDUCING
PINBALL SERVICE CALLS ...

SERVICE = $$
The new Williams Bally
pinballs will take in a lot of
money and have a high resale
but they won't necessarily
have a bottom line correspond-
ing to the income derived. The
problem? We all know the an-
swer to this one: Service.
The modem pinball requires
much more maintenance than
a video game. What is really
needed is to reduce the total
maintenance/service on the
machine.
How's a 50% reduction in ser-
vice sound? Think then your
game would be more profit-
able? Sound impossible? Well,
it's not.
With the assistance of Dan
Galarde, Director of Quality at
Williams, we discovered some
interesting things ...
STEEL BALLS
First was that the most com-
mon dirt on the playfi.eld was
iron! This had to come from
somewhere. Where? The steel
ball has been damaged since
the first plunger hit on day
one. The surface damage turns
the ball into a small file caus-
ing even more dirt on the
playfield. One solution: Re-
place the ball with a chromium
steel one. This helps. They are
1-1/16" steel bearings.
STEEL GUIDES

The bottom line is
that your game
will take in more
money and your
The piece of stainless that re-
ceived the most damage was
the flipper return guides (the
guides that are located left of
the left flipper and right of the
right flipper). On older games~
these stainless steel pieces
had a lot of damage. I have
replaced these guides with
custom Lexan. I've tested this
set-up for over 90 days and
have cut the cleaning in less

situation.

I feel that the ball should be
replaced every year on the new
hot games today. While we will
get some ball damage in that
time, it's cheaper to replace
the ball that to perform the
cleaning (and prevent the ex-
treme playfield damage). I
also feel that the game will
earn more money if it is clean.
Note that a real high earning'
game can get real dirty in 2
weeks. Incorporating these
improvements will increase

tion of coin acceptance prob-
lems. The' Imonex will help in
this area.
JAMMIN'
Coin calls are also a major ser-
vice problem on all games. As
reported last issue, I'm testing
the new Imonex coin rejector.
So far, I feel that this unit will
eliminate between 75% to 95%
of all coin jams.
This system will eliminate at
least 80% of your broken links.
I also feel that the plunger/link
- stop sleeve should be re-
placed every 15,000 plays as a
matter of routine mainte-
nance.
It will reject a Canadian coin
by using a small magnet, just
like a Valley pool table, by re-
directing the coin into the re-
jector. It doesn't hold the coin
(no jam).
THE END
These simple changes to your
pinball machines will elimi-
nate at least half of your ser-
vice calls. Don't forget, driving
time is very expensive. Couple
the service savings with the
increased gross and reduced
walk-aways from jammed
IN
TRANSACTIONS
The new Williams/Bally
games may be better suited to
having an Imonex and a bill
acceptor. This would help us
get a higher transaction price
and cost-per-play. It works on
jukeboxes; having a bill accep-
tor normally raises the gross
income. The higher the trans-
action price -the higher the
gross.
- Changing the price from 25¢ to
50¢ will cut maintenance in
half, with the possible excep-
crank arm for the external
spring. Purchasing the exter-
nal spring(# 10-364)will allow
you to update your game and
eliminate the conical spring.
The new coil stop is slightly
longer and must be used. The
plunger/link (# A-15847-P)
and coil stop (# A-12390) can
be bought separately.
COinS.
THE LINK
Lastly, and equally important
is the new Williams/Bally
Mega link. The factory has an
update kit(# A-17222) which
has a coil stop, plunger/link
The bottom line is that your
game will take in more money
and your profit margin will be
larger too ...
A win-win situation.
