The following is in response to
Rick Davies' follow-up to Bill
Johnston's comments con-
cerning bad coin switches in
the May and July 1993 issues
ofSTAR,flECH Journal.
COMMENTS
Bill said he was finding a lot of
coin switches, mostly Coin
Controls', that had a resis-
tance as great as 220 ohms.
This may be due to the switch
contact material being made of
silver. Silver can tarnish even
in air conditioned locations
and cause an increase in the
switch resistance. Sooner or
later, the resistance will build
up enough to cause a failure.
I've seen this happen myself.
SOLUTION
Bill was asking if anyone knew
of a better replacement. Well,
I've got one for him. The Happ
coin switch uses gold
crosspoint contacts. Gold is a
"noble metal" meaning that it
will not tarnish, oxidize or cor-
rode. The crosspoint contacts
insure that there is always a
good contact made when the
switch closes. The resistance
of this switch is measured in
thousandths of an ohm and
will not increase due to tarnish
like a silver switch. After ex-
tensiv·e research, Happ began
using only Cherry Electrical
E-53 series gold crosspoint
coin switches on all of it's coin
door products several months
ago.
I'm always picking up "miracle
cleaners" most of which disap-
point me until now. Castrol
Super Clean is a purple
degreasing cleaner that will
remove cigarette tar, smoking
film and grime from games
and vending equipment.
RECOMMENDATION
I've compared it to other clean~
ers and find it to be vastly
superior. Castrol Super Clean
is available at Pep Boys Auto
Stores for $7 per gallon or $3
for a spray bottle.

If you are having a problem
with bad coin switches, try one
ofHapp's.

Other switches may have a

switch guarantees a gold
crosspoint contact.
