Intermittently the Hook game
may perform erratically, occa-
sionally going into "Slam Tilt" or
kicking some solenoids for no ap-
parent reason.

CAUSE
~ An
intermittently grounded
• switch strobe line. (Typically the
green wire with the yellow trace
on the left Drop Target bank is
pinched against the playfield
support bracket.)
SOLUTION
Check the wiring on the left Drop
Target bank to make sure that
none of the wires can be pen-
etrated by the playfield support
bracket on the left side of the
cabinet.
PROCEDURE
If the wires look like they might
get caught when the playfield is
in its normal position, dress the
wires away from the edge of the
playfield and secure them to the
harness with electrical tape or a
tie wrap. This should prevent
them from drifting back where
~they might get caught between
the playfield and its supporting
bracket.

EQUIPMENT
All bill acceptors and games em-
ploying opto switches.
PROBLEM
It is often difficult to quickly de-
termine if the problem with an
opto switch is in the LED or the
transistor portion of the unit.
SOLUTION
MURPHY'S

corruption
is always reported
in the past tense.
Purchase a Infrared Detector
Probe. I found an inexpensive
probe available from MCM Elec-
tronics that measures 4. 75 "x. 75"
for $6.95, part #72-003. This
probe is simply a piece of plastic
that glows pale orange when in-
frared is present. The size of this
probe works well in bill acceptors
and pin game opto units where
accessibility can be a problem.
PROBE USE
You can quickly determine which
half of the opto assembly is the
problem by simply exposing the
probe to the LED.

It is easier to see the probe glow
under subdued light conditions.
Also, test both halves of the opto
assembly if you are not sure
which half is the LED portion.

PROBLEM
PROBLEM
Supercharger Opto LED falling
out of opto assembly with LED
leads breaking at PC board.
Some Pub Time dart games
(Scorpion or older games with
Scorpion Target kits)mayexperi-
ence intermittent scoring prob-
lems.
CAUSE
Due to variations in diameter of
LEDs, some may be loose in the
holder on the assembly.
problem develops this procedure
should be completed.
MODIFICATION
A matrix ribbon cable connector
clamp has been developed to safe-
guard against any intermittent
connections.
SYMPTOM
Occasionally, a dart may hit a
segment and not score.
Apparently the heavy vibration
from the Supercharger Ramp
ca uses the LED to vibrate enough
to break the leads where they are
soldered to the PC board.
The blue edge connector on the
matrix ribbon tail may have
faulty crimps.
SOLUTION
SOLUTION
If the LED is loose in the LED
holder, it may help to glue the
LED to the holder. Since we have
only had this happen a couple of
times, this is just an "early warn-
ing".
All matrix boards prior to the
date code "9123" should be modi-
fied to prevent future problems.
This modification update kit con-
sists of:
• Metal clamp
• Screws (2)
• Nuts and (2)
• Foam strips (2)
It is a (5) minute procedure that
can be done on location.
