Cannot reduce width down far
enough to view entire picture.
Vertical foldover.
PROBLEM
Check C2103 100uf/35v radial
capacitor. Replace and verify.
So far we have had a couple of 4
slot Neo Geo's come to our shop
with graphics problems. Both
games work fine for a few hours
and then suddenly the screen
would be missing lines of graph-
ics.
CAUSE
This particular monitor I encoun-
tered was in a Taito Chase HQ.
PRoCEDURE
After confirming that my B+ was
running at+ 130vdc, I went hunt-
ing in the width coil circuits and
found that C42, a 4. 7uf @ 50v
electrolytic, was open.
Replacing C42 brought the width
down and was then completely
controllable by the Horizontal
Amplitude Control RV 4, located
on the stand up PCB with all of
the other vertical and horizontal
controls.
CAUSE
Upon inspection with a high~
power magnifying glass, I found
some legs on the custom chips
were lifted slightly off the runs.

Horiz Tear
SOLUTION
Applying pressure to the legs
with a pair of tweezers while
heating up the joint with a fine
tipped soldering iron will
reattach them properly to the
board.
l..oCATION
C42 is located inside of the big
metal heat sink, to the left of the
flyback, and requires the use of a
needlenose pliers to remove and
replace.

PROBLEM
Horizontal tear when the moni-
tor is cold, but seems to correct
itself when it warms up.
SOLUTION
Replace C354 (47uf@25v). Read-
just horizontal hold and horizon-
tal shift to properly center the
picture.
NOTE
Extreme care must be taken
when doing this procedure.
Double check all connections to
make sure you have not shorted
any legs or traces together.

OPERATOR'S CONCERN
Do you have a problem removing
glue residue and paper labels
from plexiglass or glass.
Plastic ramps are expensive.
Plus, on older games they are
hard to come by.
You have just purchased a second
hand Atari Race Drivin' and
would like to keep one or two
parts in stock that might be
needed in the future.
SOLUTION
SOLUTION
Try straight ammonia. It's cheap
and works great!
Williams now manufactures
Ramp Side Protectors. They are
on all of their new games.

On Floppy
SUBJECT
Phillips (call 1-800-526-9354)
has an IBM-pc & compatibles
floppy that can access the full
ECG replacement semiconductor
data base of over 262,000 indus-
try part numbers.
Typical access time of under 1
second! Over 4000 ECG compo-
nents are available in the pro-
gram, making it the largest cross-
ref data base available.
If your computer has 640k of
RAM, a hard drive, and a floppy
~either 3.5" or 5.25", you can order
one of these and perhaps improve
one of the most tedious problems
techs have, hunting up parts.
Call Phillips.
You want know the repair record
and failure chart on this piece
and what parts to keep in stock.
Many of these side protectors can
be fitted onto older games. Then
you have a permenent repair.
BOTl'OM LINE
These will become a big money
saver for the operator. Congratu-
lations, Williams -an excellent
idea!

PAST EXPERIENCE
The Race Drivin' and Hard
Drivin' games are pretty solid.
• The biggest single failure I have
seen is the solder joints on the
pedal board's voltage regulator
cracking. This is a basic TO220
package 7812 regulator.
• I also have fixed a few shifter
assemblies but they have had
various minor problems.
Overall a good dependable game,
no need to be overly worried with
this used piece.
