Rowe's OBA-2 Bill Transport
Repair & Maintenance (Part 21
Rowe's OBA-2 Bill Transport can be found in most of
Rowe'sjukeboxes, old and new. Rowe's CD-100 se-
ries jukeboxes all have the OBA-2 Bill Transport in
them. Everything.from Video Poker Terminals to Vend-
ing Machines use the Rowe OBA-2 Bill Transports.
In the first installment of this two parter
(STARfiECH JoumaL April '91) I talked about
changing the Upper Belts on the OBA-2 Bill
Transport (BT from now on). This month I'll talk
about troubleshooting the BT.
The following is a list of problem likelihoods and
things to check.
Motor speed is adjusted.
Mag gain is adjusted.
Upper Belts are in good shape and clean.
Lower Belts are adjusted properly and clean.
5. Output Shaft isn't binding the belts.
6. Motor Drive Belt is adjusted properly.
7. Mag Head working properly, including pres-
sure roller.
8. Optical Problems.

The Lower Belts should give with finger pres-
sure, at least 3/16" play. Second, if dirt and ink
is your problem, then take a cloth (or a thick
paper towel like Wipe-Alls) and saturate it with
flux remover (the kind that's harmful to plas-
tics). Take the BTand flip it upside down, plug it
in and push the test button on the OBA Control
Unit.
While the BTmotor spins the Lower Belts, apply
the cloth (with flux remover on it) to the Lower
Belts. This will remove the dirt and ink, plus take
off the shiny coating that builds up on the Lower
Belts. Try not to get the flux remover all over the
BTwhile you apply the cloth to the Lower Belts.
OUTPUT SHAFT BINDING
This occurs after replacing the Upper Belts. The
Output Shaft rollers should move freely with a
flick of your finger. It it doesn't. make sure the
Output Shaft roller's flanges are outside the
Anti-cheat Shaft's rollers (Figure 3, April issue
STAR*TECH Journal).
LowER Bms
The Lower Belts do wear out, but not nearly as
often as the Upper Belts do. Changing the Lower
Belts is challenging. You should be experienced
at Upper Belt replacement first. You have a
better grasp of how the BT is assembled/ disas-
sembled if you have done the Upper Belts a
number of times first.
Most of the time, the Lower Belt problem is
slippage due to dirt and ink from the monies
passed. The first thing you should check is the
Lower Belt tension (refer to Figure 1).
If that's alright. then remove the Output Shaft,
take a small round file and ftle the Output Shaft
mounting holes slightly bigger. Remount the
Output Shaft. being careful to remount shaft
taking advantage of the enlarged mounting
holes. If the procedure didn't work, then repeat
the filing to enlarge the mounting holes.
CLICKING MOTOR
While the BT's motor is running, you may hear
a clicking noise, this could mean you need a new
BT Motor Drive Belt (that's the one with the
corrugation on one side of the belt).
More than likely it needs to be adjusted (refer to
Figure 1). If the belt is clicking, it's probably too
loose. Loosen the two screws shown in Figure 1
and adjust belt to a finger tension of 3/32" play.
If this doesn't work, the big white gear or Reduc-
tion Gear may be broken.

MAGNETIC HEAD PROBLEMS
This is usually indicated by the BT rejecting a
fairly good shaped 1985 series bill (refer to Rowe
Service Bulletins G-102 and G-107). OBA-2Con-
trol Units don't tell you if the Magnetic head is
the cause of your bill acceptance problems, but
the new OBA Control Units (610389-03), the
ones with Rowelink Communication, flashes the
fault light 5 or 6 times after rejecting a bill, to
indicate problems associated with the Magnetic
Head.
