SYMPTOM
SUBJECT
Intermittent resetting.
Preventive maintenance: This dynamite earning
pinball should have this quick fix done to it
before you put it on location.
PROBLEM
I noticed a problem in the 2 Desert Assault
dedicated uprights I received recently. The
"Power Play 150" power supply will crank up to
a max of 5.2 volts but by the time it gets to the
board, it's down to 4. 9 volts.
CAUSE
PROBLEM
The new ball popper assembly (located at the
Lava Seltzer hole) has a screen holding the Ball
Popper cap on (it used to be a roll pin). This screw
came out after the first 1000 plays, causing a
service call only 3 days on location.
This is due to excessive wire length from the +5
Vdc supply to the board, and a JAMMA harness
that is not fully stuff ed.
SOLUTION
Cut the power supply harness length down and
add 2 wires to the empty +5 volt slots, and 2 wires
to the empty ground slots on the Jamma edge
connector to improve current flow.
These modifications were enough to give me
exactly +5.00 volts at the board.
SOLUTION
Simply take the screw out and put a small drop
ofLocktite on the threads and reassemble. This
simple procedure done now will save you time
and labor ($$$) later.

PROBLEM
PROBLEM
Having problems getting your MCT 9000's hori-
zontal width back down to size?
SOLUTION
Replace C42 (4. 7uf@ 50V non-polarized). This
problem is especially noticeable after replacing a
bad flyback with the new replacement part.
SYMPTOM
Monitor appears to be out of sync. Adjusting
horizontal hold causes high voltage to increase
and shut down monitor.
Checked IC401 and sync amp. TR204: both
checked fine.
SOLUTION
Replace capacitor C459(100u@ 16v). It's open.

"I'd Rather Fix Them Than Play Them."
By Dari E. Davidson
Vice President of Operations
Data East USA, Inc.
As a 10-year participant in the coin-op marketplace, it's been fascinating to witness the light-
speed evolution of game technology. Every season that goes by brings forth bigger and
bolder products for the ever-fickle game players that are our industry's life-blood.
Naturally, there is a downside to the non-stop technology advances: Keeping all these new
super-duper-whiz-bangs up and running has become increasingly difficult-and crucial to
the financial stability of our industry. Remember that a machine out-of-order take up floor-

space without contributing anything toward the bottom line. As a result, today's coin-op
manufacturer must provide their customers' field repair technicians with immediate and
direct access to a dedicated technical-support network.
At Data East, our company policy is clear: We will not release a product until our technical-
support department has thoroughly examined every possible area of repair-primarily those
systems bound to degrade over time due to usage and wear-and has established a clear-
cut chain of support for that product.
For example, we recently shipped Cosmogang, a highly successful redemption product that
on first sight can prove quite intimidating: Light-gun technology and countless moving parts
packed into a IO-foot long cabinet. That's why we must do every thing in our power to help
repair technicians unfamiliar with this type of game feel comfortable and confident about the
task at hand. Data East accomplishes this through a three-phase support process:

Resilient Grune Design
Before Cosmogang even went on the assembly line, we had already gone through
numerous prototypes to determine the sturdiest, most reliable way to construct the unit.
