PROBLEM
SUBJECT
Have you ever found any problems relating to
two balls being kicked out into the shooter lane
on Whirlwind (first one, then the next) related to
noise on opto circuits?
Williams Opto Drop Target update needed.
I have this problem intermittently, but fre-
quently enough that I get constant complaints.
My trough switches are adjusted perfectly and
do not get hung up. But when it happens it acts
as though trough switch 2 or 3 got hung up.

I haven't had that specific symptom Doug, but I
have had many intermittent trough switches
that can be detected only in "Switch Edges" test.
PROBLEM
Once again, the Williams optical drop target
Pcb's are a continuing source of problems in the
field.
The opto leads will break with or without silicone
cement applied, the connector become inter-
mittent. the traces are too fragile and the "E-
clips" which secure the board are too difficult to
remove and reinstall.
Operators deserve an upgrade for this monster
so that Williams' pinballs can perform up to
spec. I have seen too many Elviras, Whirlwinds
and Black Knight 2000s with one or more targets
not functioning.
SUGGESTION
Hold the switch down and tug on the lugs; an
intermittent switch will flicker on and off.
We need a rugged drop target board that will
stand up to vibration, be dirt resistant and can
be swapped in and out of a game easily.
NOTE
NO E-CLIPS, PLEASE!
PROCEDURE
I've also had a stuck switch in the left bottom ball
reserve lane that will cause your problem.
Sometimes these switches will not release every
time they are free.
If this cannot be accomplished, go back to the old
fashioned microswitch target banks that rarely
needed any attention.

PROBLEM
SOLUTION
Ball will Jump on top of the plastic below the
yellow metal ramp (next to the left lock) and get
stuck between two screws.
Remove the phillips head screw located next to
the side of the cabinet and the yellow metal ramp
entrance. The ball will no longer get hung up.

SUBJECT
PROBLEM
Operators will save time as more and more
manufacturers comply with Standard #28: All
mechanical coin mechs will be interchangeable in
all coin doors.
The picture has a vertical cut off or a folded over
edge on one side of the screen.
SOLUTION
This sounds like a Nintende, C407 capacitor
ADDITIONALLY
problem, but this is a Wells Gardner monitor.
In the works are standards for track ball plugs;
pulling 3rd and 4th players off a PCB, the most
efficient voltages for fluorescent lamps, game
lamps, and hard meters; best method for giving
operators more pricing options for initial game
play (for any players), continuations ...
Well, the solution is also similar. Capacitor C311
4. 7ufd 160vdc in the vertical section is baked
open. Replacing the cap will restore your picture
to normal again.
Several standards are being revised. These will
be printed in an upcoming issue.
FROM THE COMPLIANCE CoMMITTEE
Hantarex has been awarded the first "AMOA
APPROVED STANDARD" sticker for their
monitors. Ray Fontana, Sales Manager for
Hantarex, has been working with the Stan-
dardization Committee for the past two years.
Other manufacturers who wish to apply for
these stickers can submit their products to me at
6 Sutton Place, Edison, NJ 08817 or call 201 /
287-4990 as I may already have them in stock.
