Industry Survey: Failure-Prone Parts
This latest Industry survey reveals what many of you may have suspected but were
not dead certain about: What's the most troublesome part of a Coin-Op game?
STARflECH Journal conducted this survey during this past month (August ) on its
electronic bulletin board system (BBS). Following the statistical numbers are com-
ments from the participants (operators, distributors, manufacturers, technicians,
suppliers, etc.) who represent a cross-section of the Industry.
COMMENTS
"The newer playfields with ramps etc., seem
to have more problems with posts coming
loose. Increased coil power adds to this, I
believe." Statesville, NC
"Extension to Williams playfields: Biggest
problem is replacing rubbers... new play-
fields are just getting too fast! They are
pounding the !@#* out my rubbers. 'Course
it breaks my heart to see the cashbox." Webb
City, MO
"Poor quality parts normally cause the most
amount of service on control panels, coin
doors, pins and cranes." Amarillo, 1X
.. Although they're not perfect, games have
gotten much more reliable over the last 3 ~
years. My nuisance service calls have been
greatly reduced due to better control panel
parts and Williams pinball engineering."
Havertown, PA

"Usually a non-standard part requires the
most attention on games, i.e. 720 joystick,
World Series bats, US Classic track ball"
Philadelphia, PA
"Overall, switches are the most common
problem with joysticks second. Coin mech's
are next and then bill changers (optics are a
pain to keep clean)." Zion, IL
"Besides Coin mech's, the joysticks and
~buttons are the high maintenance items.
Also, moving parts such as bumpers."
Anahe~ CA
'The bill transport on changers needs to be
kept exceptionally clean." Watertown, NY
"Playfield problems, coils, lamps and broken
wires are my high failure items." Chicago, IL
"Sure could use more flowcharts for trou-
bleshooting switching power supplies! I'm
gradually learning more about them, but
each manufacturer is different. Please put
more info about them in the manuals." Fort
Worth, TX
"By far, the most trouble prone part of coin
equipment is the part that handles coins!"
Orlando, FL
. "You really have to keep on top of your pins.
~V1deos you can collect and ignore without
too much risk, but if you don't keep search-
ing for where those fallen-off screws, bolts
and flash resistors went to, your pins be-
come so muchjunkreal quickly!" Poway, CA
