Lock-Tite & Preventive Maintenance

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
Solving problems before they appear. Some
"route persons" and a few "service persons"
are convinced that preventive maintenance
is just extra work. Someone mentioned
screws that are tight one day then loose the
next. Discover the science of Lock-Tite, there
are two different kinds of locking com-
pounds in various strengths.
LOCK-TITE
The first type we'll discuss is called aerobotic
type locking compound, it is usually red in
color. (aerobotic means it requires air to set).
The red compound is applied to the nut/bolt
when tight. If this compound is used as a
thread locker you had better hire Hercules to
do your maintenance, because this stuff is a
bitch to loosen when improperly used.
BLUE GOO
The other type of compound is usually blue,
it is also available in different strengths. It is
called a anaerobotic compound -this
means that it sets with a lack of air. When
properly used as a thread locker (applied to
threads before tightening), it will secure your
hardware against any reasonable vibration.
SCHEDULED PM
If your route-person will take ten minuets
and apply Lock-Tite to the nuts and bolts
before they get loose, this will solve your
tight today- loose tomorrow headache.
RESULTS
It took a long time, a lot of heartache and
some downright threats, to initiate an effec-
tive PM program in our organization. While
we still have our problems after two years,
we finally are seeing results. So that old
saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" goes hand
in hand with "Ignorance is bliss". Fix it
before it breaks and when it does break, fix
it right! That's what will keep the games oir'
the floor and out of the shop.
Motorola Seniicon-
ductor List On BBS
The 1988 Motorola semiconductors cross
reference program is up and running on the
STAR*TECH Journal electronic Bulletin
Board System (BBS).
This IBM program gives you data on the
following devices: Diodes/Rectifiers, Optoe-
lectronic Devices, Power Modules, RF De-
vices, Sensors, Small Signal Devices, Thy-
ristors, Zeners and Transient Suppressors.
Gives the hard to fmd data on most of you~
IN and 2N devices. This program is very
handy for fmding substitutes that you can
readily buy locally. For more information

Diode/Coil Tester Modification

Refer to the article, .. Build Your Own Test
Equipment Project" published in the
January, 1989 issue of STAR,tTECH
Journal by Jean-Guy Hardy. This project
is a great idea! Now, I won't have to
desolder those diodes from the pinball
machine coils to test them any more.
FINDINGS
After building the project, though, I took a
flipper coil (FL21-400/33-1300) to test. In
the 1300 section, the reading was perfect: 1
LED on and 1 LED off. In the 400 section,
however, both LEDs on the tester remained
off. After verifying that the diodes and flipper
coil were good, I did a little thinking.
MODIFICATION
The voltage drop, because of the low supply
current, was not sufficient to light the for-
ward-biased LED. I then modified a few
values in the tester and was then able to
successfully test flipper coils.
NOTE
Due to the high current nature of this modi-
fied tester, this test needs to be completed
quickly. That is to say that the test is now a
"Touch & Go" type of procedure (as opposed
to clipping the leads onto the coil under test).
A couple seconds is all that is needed any-
way to get a good/bad reading on the tester
LEDs. Thanks Jean-Guy Hardy for a good
tool that will fmd a permanent place in my
travel box!

PROBLEM
Hi Tron power supplies not restarting after
being turned off.
SOLUTION
Capacitor Cl0 (220 mfd/25v) and resistor
RS (33 ohms/2w) go bad. Replace Cl0, and
also RS, when it looks like the capacitor is
either golden brown in color, or like it has
blown up (or undue pressure has deformed
the component).
NOTE
I have been able to fix 90%-95% of all Hi
Trans by replacing these components. Tack
this article up on your workbench!
