Williams HIGH SPEED Flipper
Update

It seems that for some reason the upper
rronitor on a PLAYQiOICE 10 loses
horizontal sync after several rronths on
location. I have encountered this problem
three tirres I1Tu7self and another routeman
said this has happened to him on six
occasions.
Whether it's in the board or the rronitor
is not important - what remedies the
problem is adjusting the horizontal hold
control on the upper rronitor for a stable
picture. This control is between the
flyback and the picture tube on the PC
board - it is not grouped with the other
controls. There is another control called
"sub brite" that's in the near center of
the board, but the horizontal hold control
- is between the flyback and the CRT; you
- could probably use a flashlight and rrost
likely a pocket screwdriver for this one.

PROBLEM: Low voltage output from the
ETU-5Jl00 switching Supply.

HIGH SPEED has been in service long enough
now that all of them need an update.
Williams has had their plastic
link/plunger asserrbly out for sorre time.
They last rruch longer than the fiber link
did. Part# Bl0655 R & L.
The E.o.s. IIUst also be replaced. The
Williams F-14 cap (5045-12098-00) must
also be added. The sleeve should also be
replaced as general maintenace every
10,000 plays.
The rrost irrp)rtant item is the flipper
coil. The lower srould be replaced with
red label (FL 11630) and the upper with
green label (FL 11722) flipper coils.
The reason for this coil is as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Runs cooler
Ea, last 5+ times longer
Keeps its power longer
Faster action
Lower ball tirre
Coils last longer.
'1.hese coils are the rrost important
irrprovenent to the pin game since auto%.
I feel the garre soould earn at least
$10.00/week more. I also recommend buying
the parts from your Williams distribitor.
PQSSIBLE CAUSE: This is not a case where
the supply has failed and blown a fuse,
but a case of low voltage.
C18, a lOOmicrofarad at 25VOC might have
baked open -resulting in the above
problem. When replacing this cap, renerrber
that on the board the hash mark denotes
the negative terminal .

Atari GAUNTLET Audio Amp
Sub Mod
By
Sam Cross
Godwin Distributing Co.
Nerth Little Rock, Arkansas
ProBLEM: TDl\2030 audio amp blows on the
audio anp/power supply board blowing the
AC supply fuses.
SOLlJI'IOO: Either replace the TDl\2030 or
roodify the surrounding components to
adapt the circuit to use a TDl\2002.
INFORMATIOO: '!he 'IDA.2030 operates from a
split p:>wer supply of +15 and -15 voe, 30
VOC total, and the TDl\2002, the more
corrm:>nly used amplifier chip which looks
package-wise just like the TDl\2030,
operates from only positive voltage and
ground, and the maximl.Dll safe supply
voltage is around +15 voe.
l-kxlifying the original factory circuit to
use the single supply voltage TDl\2002
involves eliminating the negative supply
voltage to the TDr\2002 and substituting
g 7 oun~ potential and substituting sorre
circuit COJllX)nents to allow for its single
supply type operation.
Using a progressive substitution approach,
I changed one component at a time to see
it~ effect on the TDr\2002. About the only
thing you really need to do to substitute
one for the other is to eliminate the
negative supply voltage so as not to
overvoltage the TDr\2002, but these extra
steps past STEP WMBER OOE are up to
you ...
1. cut the trace to pin 3, the
middle""100st leg of the TDl\2002, or s~ly
lift it up and insulate it from the
original negative supply, and connect it
to ground, i.e., the center leg of the
transformer windings supplying the +15,
-15 voe power.
capacitator oriented with its+ side
facing pin 4 of the TDr\2002.

4. You might, as a precaution against
distortion, reduce the value of the input
capacitance to that particular amp.
