Amusement Emporium Power
Supply Failure
By Sam Cross
Godwin Distributing Co.
t,orth Little Rock, Arkansas
CAUTION: I (and other technicians) have
observed a corm-on widespread problem with
this supply. It goes overvoltage and
destroys all of the caps inside of it by
subjecting them to voltages above what
they were rated to handle.
If it goes overvoltage the board it powers
may be damaged. I would suppose that the
cause for failure might be that the board
needs more current than the supply is
capable of providing -for a long period of
time.
IDI'E: I will add that I repair switching
supplies when economically possible, but
this supply when it fails is alroost always
a FILE 13 case!
In fact, after thinking about it, I have
never seen a case when this supply didn't
fail in the above manner.
Bally Midway will be sending their
distributors a "Fix" consisting of:
(1) piece of plexiglass,
(4) standoffs,
(4) screws and instructions.
Bally Midway distributors will be passing
these modifications to all HARDOODY
customers on a no-charge basis.

A Word About Parts & Shipping
By Exidy Customer Service
Frerront, califomia
Everyone has heard the phrase, "TIME IS
r-mEY," and this has never been more true
than in today's coin-op industry. Whenever
parts or supplies are needed for repairs,
every minute lost to down-time translates
into lost earnings. When deciding which
method of transport is "BEST," consider
the following:
1. How many dollars does the piece earn
daily when it is fully operational?
2. How many dollars are saved by going a
slow "low-cost" shipping method?
(UPS-SURFACE)
3. How many days could be saved by
shipping a faster method? (UPS-BLUE,
UPS-RED, EXPRESS MAIL, etc.)
4. And finally, how many dollars are
represented by the difference of shipping
days versus shipping costs?
EXAMPLE
Here is an example to illustrate the
differences:
3 pound package from Frerront, CA to
Baltimore, MD
1. Gane earns $100 per week. (earning only
$14.28 a day avg)
June 1987 (4)
UPS-BLUE
Lost earnings $18.56 + shipping $6.00 =
$34.56 Total Cost
UPS-RED
Lost earnings $14.28 + shipping $14.50 =
$28.78 Total Cost
A difference of as much as $31.33, (or
more), \IAJuld be forever lost if
UPS-SURFACE were chosen over the faster
shipping methods. As you can see the s called "cheaper" rrethod (UPS-SURFACE) 1.s
in fact a much more expensive alternative
when compared with lost earnings.
Additionally, when faced with this
decision early in the week, UPS-BLUE and
UPS-RED are an even better bargain, as it
can make the difference of getting that
game back into the arcade before the next
weekend (which are typically the largest
earning days).
Renerrber - Don't be a Penny wise and a
Dollar foolish. When in doubt, have it
sent UPS-BWE, or work through the nurrbers
and have it sent UPS-RED. You'll make more
money in the long run.
We at EXIDY are very much aware of the
costs involved in down-time. It is of
paramount importance to us to ship parts
orders as soon as possible, and we take
every opportunity to turn them around on
the sarne day it is received. We hope our
efforts are helping you to reduce your
lost earnings due to down-time.
2. UPS-SURFACE shipping rate is $2.99 (4+
days in-route)
3. UPS-BLUE cuts 2 days from ship time.
($6.00).
4. UPS-RED overnight cuts 3 to 3.5 days
from ship time. ($14.50)

SHIPPING METHODS
Murphy's Law #904
UPS-SURFACE
Lost earnings $57.12 + shipping $2.99 =
$60.11 Total Cost
If you can keep your head when all about
you are losing theirs, then you just don't
understand the problem.
