'Ihe Amuserrent & Music Operators
Association's 37th International
Exhibition & Educational Seminar for the
Coin-operated Games, Music & Vending
Industry was held November 6-8, 1986 at
the Hyatt Regency Olicago.
This was an excellent show. Pinball, in
particular, showed its strength with three
excellent garres: PINOOI' from Williams,
S~E SCIENCE from Bally and GOLDEN
W!N:;S from Premier/Gottlieb. My
preference, overall, was the Williams
PINOOl'. I have had this garre on location
for quite awhile now and it is earning as
strong as Williams' HIGH SPEED did \'then it
was new!
A williams has alot going for its games; I

like the plywood cabinet -this is
irnp:>rtant when the game gets moved around
alot. ('Ihe plywood is also lighter than
presslx>ard.) The new Williams legs are
stronger because of a rib. Also, a
thre:tded blind rivet is used for the leg
levelers for additional strength there.
Automatic percentaging, high score table,
reset, bad switch elimination, & reporting
is also included in the Williams
electronic packet. All these footures are
what rnakes·Williams Pinball
"user-friendly".
Within the next game or two, I expect to
see Williams add to its trouble isolation
procedures;, reµ>rting of problems in the
Game-Play node. This should include coin
switch reµ>rting if there is not a switch
closure in twelve operations.
December 1986 (3)
was between Sega with OOT RJN and Konarni
with their LEMANS sit-down driving games.
('Ihese garres are in the ten thousand
dollar range!) Both looked excellent as
attractions for big arcades.
Atari has a proven winner with
CHAMPIONSHIP SPRINI'. This game will do as
well as their SUPER SPRINI' in most
locations. As their next dedicated game,
720, (a skateboard theme), appears to be a
real winner for arcades. It's good to see
quality games from Atari again.
Bally Midway showed KWER DRIVER which is
their follow up to RAMPAGE. 'Ibis is a
3-player game. This looks like 2 good
games in a row from them.
Cinernatronics presented ~ER ZCl-lE. This
game has a monitor that roves with the
handles. I thought it was a very
impressive game!
Nintendo presented SLALOM SKI. 'Ibis game
has a base plate for the player to stand
on which controls his left-right noverrent.
This is a new concept that should be
excellent for winter locations. PLAYCHOICE
10 has been out for awhile and should be
good for 1 game locations.
capcom SPEED RJMBLER kit is doing well.
Rornstar is doing well with ARKANOIIS and
showed BUBBLE BCBBLE as their next hit.
Arachnid presented their new 6000 dart
rrachine with a nonitor. Excellent!
Konarni had TOP GUNNER, LIFE FORCE and
DClJBLE DRIBBLE as kits. I have heard sorre
big collections from OOUBLE DRIBBLE.
Rowe had a CD, (corrpact disc), for their
juke box. 'Ibey will have CD's and 45's.
The battle for the best big arcade game
Seeburg has been doing excellent with
their new CD box. Hopefully, this will

'!he standardization rnoverrent has
progressed further during AIDA. Ira
Bettlerren, of C. A. Robinson/California,
is now on the cormiittee representing the
distributor/manufacturer organization.
Joe Dillon from Williams Electronics
presented our initial ideas to JAMMA (the
Jap:i.nese Trade Show) during their Fall
show in October of this year.
Sega left the Industry hanging with HAN3
ON. 'Ihe problems I presented to them a
year ago were never addressed. 'Ihings have
gotten worse rather than better! Howell
Ivy (VP Engineering), a veteran games
designer, has recently been hired to help
with these problems.
New standardization items presented have
included; buttons for games, lamps and
flourescent lamps. Having the Game-Play
node indicators for video and pinball were
presented. This will alert the ope 7 ator to
coin jams, control failures, and pinball
switch failures -while the game is being
played.
Being able to eliminate 30% of the service
call is my goal with the standardization
program. Sp:>tting a service call while at
the location will eliminate a call.
Driving time is a bigger factor than the
repair in nost cases!
ESD, fran Pennsylvania, was at the show
selling their coin slides. I pointed out
the problems I encountered in last nonth' s
STAR"'TECH JOORNAL. '!hey are standing
behind these slides for l year. So if
you're having problems with their product,
contact your supplier for replacement
slides. In fairness to ESD, there are no
dependable roin slides that I can
reconmmd. My ABT, (the old standard) last
less than 90 days on my Dynamo table.
Dynamo had a Cornet slide with the return
spring under a star washer. 'Ihe star wil~
fracture the spring -causing it to break.
A call waiting to happen.
Fact: At the recent Valley 8-Ball
Tournament, 15 of 80 Valley tables didn't
work the weekend do to ESD roin slides. We
need a system that works!
Sega had ENDURO RACER at the show. This is
without a doubt an excellent game, but
further irnproverrents are needed. 'Ihe nost
irnp:>rtant is an oilite bearing on the top
of the steering assembly. This should be
corning in within 30 days. Sega is also
testing a Teflon cable assembly for their
games. '!he springs must have a mount
Lift was there with their same old
product -the 'I01MY LIFT GATE. 'Ihe back of
the gate is a rust bucket! The rust
spreads from the vertical ribs. At the
show they told me the piston didn't need
to be plated. After talking to their
president, they are now looking at
plating. 'Ihe pivot, they state, should be
lubricated every 30 days. Good Luck! They
need a better system and a repair kit for
their old products.
.Torrat\Y
,A new lift cornp:i.ny, (Eage Lift) , was at
the show with these irnproverrents.
