only offers two. But with its many
Specials offered, it more than
compensates for this.
I found that while in a particular
hangout of mine, the regulars seemed to
en.ioy competing against one another for
drinks, where low scorer pays. This
results in money being pumped into the
machine, as well as across the bar.
What more could both sides ask for?
A Final Note:
To the genuine player there isn't
anything more frustrating than playing
a machine in which the flippers lack
power. I believe that the flippers on
the machine can make or break a machine
and, therefore, should be maintained on
a regular basis to ensure that the
rubber and power of same are kept in
tip-top shape! Play on ... ROOT.
Score(sl can also gain a replay reward.
Williams designs all System-9 games
COMET, to new a few) to include many
operator-adJustable settings for the
game features, thereby permitting a
wide range of challenges and rewards
for the player. This allows the
operator to vary the setting of many
features to contend with whatever level
of player skill the operator finds at
each location, In addition, it even
allows the operator the ability to
evaluate the number of replays obtained
by exceeding the high score(sl, as well
as how many times other features were
exceeded. In this way, Williams allows
the operator to adJust the game to suit
the location, so that he can achieve a
consistently good earning level for the
SYSTEM 9 GAMES
Williams appreciates the C0111111ents
provided by John Pilarchik in his
September '85 "ROOT /PLAYER" column
about the SPACE Sl-llTTLE game. lln
addition to the game registration cards
returned by our operators, Williams
utilizes this information as part of
our "user feedback" (also provided by
our test game locations, as well as
in-house testing, and other user
communcationsl. "User feedback" aids
our gaae designers in establishing the
Factory Settings of various game
features, improving game operation,
etc.
As a long-time pinball player, Mr.
Pilarchik's C0111111ents reflect a player's
point-of-view about SPACE SHUTTLE, a
pinball game that has been very
successful and profitable in a variety
of locations for many operators. He
does remark about what may be a
significant item requiring
clarification to the game operator:
Factory Settings (such as 1,200,000
points) are ONLY recomendations. The
operator can raise or lower these
settings, by simple switch operation,
as described in each game's Instruction
Manual, to allow whatever level of
player reward he desires. (For example,
the operator could adJust this game to
enable the player to have as many as
four replay levels,) Exceeding High

The Williams' Factory Settings are
only intended as initial guidelines to
the operator, Reference to the
Instruction Manual's Bame AdJustment
Procedure shows the adJustable features
and their setting ranges (enabling the
operator to control the number of
rewards given to the player),
WILLIAMS

Reference to the Instruction Manual's
Bookkeeping "1ode allows the operator to
check h01r1 many times each gaae's player
rewards are achieved; the operator can
then determine whether a feature needs
a change in setting, When it does, a
few operations of the switches on the
Coin Door (and perhaps the Credit
button) are all that are necessary to
achieve the desired change,
Thus, Williams provides each operator
with the opportunity to be a "Bame Play
Designer", by the settings he provides
in each game. He certainly becomes his
own Profit Designer via these settings;
his choices determine the level of
replays given as rewards to the
skillful player, and they obviously
affect the income the operator receives
fro111 the game. Williams hopes that each
operator is utilizing these adJustments
to the fullest, giving the player the
proper challenge (and Reward), while
keeping the game's earnings at the
proper level, Good Reward/Bame Play=
Excellent Profits!
