WILLIAMS
GORGAR SOLENOID PROBLEM RESPONSE
BY AARON TOSTIEVIN, SERVICE TECHNICIAN, ED'S DISTRIBUTING, LANSING, Ml
W
e recently received the following
etter from one of our subscribers,
responding to an article in our April '84 issue
from Australia regarding . Williams' Gorgar
solenoid problem. Mr. Tostievin's letter reads
as follows:
" .. . I have had a similar problem with some
Williams games as described in your July '83
and April '84 Journals. On close look with a
light and telescope, I have found small solder
bridges across the control pins and power
supply pins. Also, I have found internal shorts
on the PIA chips used in the switch strobes at
the same points.
There has been just enough feedback
current to turn on the driver chips without the
game in the play mode.
The chips affected are IC5 and IC11 on the
driver board (pins 19 & 20 and 39 & 40).
To stop the problem I removed both chips,
cleaned the board, and installed low profile IC
sockets in case the problem happened again.
I have not had any more problems with burning
coils in those games since September '83."

ne fix that was called into me last
month could be called "What the
symptoms mean" instead. On a Taito Front
Line video game-while you're playing along,
if the screen jumps a complete scene each
time the joystick is moved (like going into
warp drive), and then during the tank scene a
ton of garbage is present (like a severe program
problem). Check your joystick! It seems that if
the contact for up is touching while the contact
for down is energized, these symptoms will
appear!

nother bit of information for the field
technician: A remote control unit for
the LD-V1000 disc player is available through
Pioneer. The controller for the LD-V1000 disc
player is known as part #GGV-100 and the
extension cable is known as EXT-100. Useful
little articles to have if testing the LD-V1000 is
desired.
Next month we will get back to the regular
grind! Take care until then ... Bear.
